The Clinical Assistant (Dental Assistant) is responsible for assisting the surgeon with oral surgical procedures in the Operating Room, supervised by a surgeon. When working in a correctional institution, the Clinical Assistant also follows all security procedures required for providing dental and surgical support to an incarcerated population. This includes working within secure areas, following restricted-item guidelines, and coordinating with correctional officers to ensure safe inmate movement and clinical operations. Education A dental assistant in the state of South Carolina may perform basic supportive dental procedures specified by the state dental practice act under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist. There are no education or training requirements for this level of dental assisting. The advanced dental assistant performs expanded functions under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist. To earn Expanded Duty Dental Assistant (EDDA) status in SC, a dental assistant must: Graduate from a CODA-accredited dental assisting program, or Complete two years of continuous full-time employment as a chairside dental assistant. Working Conditions: Works in an Operating Room and clinical environment, within a correctional facility, includes providing care within secure or restricted areas and adhering to correctional safety protocols. May work in close proximity to inmates under escort and must maintain professional boundaries at all times.
