The Dental Assistant is responsible for providing care for and treating detainees in a correctional setting. The Dental Assistant works under the direct supervision, assisting the Dentist and/or Dental Hygienist in chairside dentistry in a correctional setting. Additional responsibilities include preparing and sterilizing dental instruments, preparing and maintaining the dental operatory, operating radiographic equipment, and additional administrative tasks as needed.

Requirements

  • Requires graduation from a nationally accredited dental assistant program.
  • Graduate of a nationally accredited dental assistant program
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of a dental assisting program or at least six months of experience in dental assisting
  • Virginia DA license or ability to obtain
  • Current Basic Life Support
  • Ability to obtain a security clearance, to include drug screen and criminal background check

Nice To Haves

  • Correctional Dental Assistant experience preferred but not required

Responsibilities

  • Assists the dentist with the treatment of inmates/residents by setting up all instruments for each patient and treatment to be rendered and preparing impressions and filling materials.
  • After each treatment, sterilize the dental unit and instruments used and replace instruments prior to the next patient treatment.
  • Control medication, syringes and other dental supplies or equipment; inventory as required by established procedures
  • Keep equipment and work area clean; utilize appropriate sanitation methods.
  • Review dental services provided to prevent the inappropriate use or duplication of services.
  • Review status of inmates/residents for completion of all necessary intervention and treatments and services.
