About The Position

The Dental Assistant is responsible for preparing the patient for dental treatment and assisting the dentist with various clinical dental procedures. This role involves supporting patient flow, performing initial patient visit tasks, assisting with dental procedures, and managing operatory readiness and supplies.

Requirements

  • Possesses work-related skills at a higher level than completion of high school, including formal written and verbal communications skills, computational and computer skills, mathematical, and technical skills.
  • Proof of completion of high school with a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 or completion of General Educational Development (GED) with a minimum overall score of 162.5.
  • Health care related knowledge frequently acquired through completion of a trade school, para-professional, or certificate type program.
  • If an individual has completed a degree at a higher level than required by the role and had a stronger GPA in that program, they may provide proof of GPA from that degree in lieu of the high school diploma.
  • Two years of experience or successful completion of a dental assistant externship with Family HealthCare Network.
  • Proof of completing a Radiation Safety Course.
  • Ability to prepare more complex documents in Microsoft Word, including creating tables, charts, graphs and other elements.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Excel to review and compile data, including the use of formulas, functions, lookup tables and other standard spreadsheet elements.
  • Ability to create basic presentations in Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Dental Assistant certification.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting and monitoring patient flow in the back office, including scrubbing appointments, assisting in patient distribution, informing patients of wait times, and understanding front office workflows to assist with scheduling.
  • Performing various initial aspects of the patient visit, such as greeting patients, escorting them to the operatory, obtaining vital signs and patient data, reviewing and updating health records, documenting in the electronic health record, assuring completion of consent forms, operating dental radiographic equipment, and disinfecting/preparing the operatory.
  • Performing supportive dental procedures under general supervision, including sterilizing instruments, assisting the dentist during treatment procedures (charting, restorative, prosthodontics, endodontics, oral surgery, periodontics, pedodontics), ensuring patient comfort, providing post-treatment instructions, and offering oral health education.
  • Taking impressions for diagnostic and opposing models, bleaching trays, temporary crowns and bridges, and sports guards with proper pour-ups.
  • Applying non-aerosol and non-caustic topical agents.
  • Removing post-extraction and periodontal dressings.
  • Applying topical fluoride after scaling and polishing.
  • Placing and removing rubber dams.
  • Placing wedge and removing matrices.
  • Communicating with patients and suppliers for scheduling appointments, ordering supplies, and coordinating equipment repairs.
  • Preparing and stocking dental operatories and monitoring adequate supplies.
  • Discarding Biohazard waste and sharps.
  • Performing weekly testing and weekly/monthly cleaning of sterilization equipment.
  • Performing daily and weekly cleaning of water lines in dental operatory units.
  • Maintaining accurate and timely logs.
  • Assisting in other operatories or in the front office as needed based on supervisor direction.
  • Adhering to the Attendance and Absenteeism Policy.
  • Presenting to and working at any FHCN location based on business need.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
