About The Position

The Dental Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting dentists in the operatory, maintaining instruments, work areas, and supplies under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist. This position reports to the Dental Staff Manager and is essential in ensuring the smooth operation of dental treatment and patient care, aligning with the organization's mission to improve lives through accessible, high-quality healthcare.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate from an approved educational program in dental assisting.
  • Licensed registration certificate in x-ray technology approved by the Department of Environmental Protection.
  • CPR Required.
  • Works with hazardous and bio-hazardous materials.
  • Long hours of standing and walking.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual (Spanish) is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Greet patients in the waiting area and escort them to the dental treatment area.
  • Review patient dental records, including procedures, X-rays, referrals, labs, and medical history.
  • Take and record vital signs, such as blood pressure.
  • Take dental radiographs and ensure clarity and readability.
  • Prepare the dental operatory by setting up appropriate equipment for the planned procedure and explaining the process to the patient.
  • Perform pre-impression evaluations, including selecting tray sizes and taking primary impressions.
  • Clean and disinfect all rooms after patient treatment and maintain daily disinfection of the entire treatment area.
  • Manage instrumentation by sonicating, bagging, and autoclaving instruments daily, and setting treatment trays.
  • Maintain scheduled maintenance of all dental equipment.
  • Perform four-handed dentistry, including retracting patient's cheek and tongue, removing debris, and assisting with dental procedures.
  • Assist in training students and new staff members.
  • Maintain logs for bio, autoclave/sterilization, and instrument rotation.
  • Close down rooms, restock supplies, run lines, and properly shut down equipment.
  • Provide oral health education to patients.
  • Pour and trim dental models.
  • Maintain dental supply inventory.
  • Review schedules to ensure lab cases are available.
  • Provide post-operative instructions to patients after extractions.
  • Ensure a safe environment of care and reduce the risk of infections.
  • Interact professionally with patients, visitors, staff, and outside agencies.
  • Contribute to improving organizational performance activities.
  • Promote positive working relationships.
  • Interact with other departments to achieve the health center mission.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Identify problems and develop recommendations for resolution.
  • Organize and prioritize tasks.
  • Assume responsibility for ongoing professional growth and development.
  • Participate in department planning activities.
  • Participate in health center committees.
  • Adhere to personnel policies.
  • Maintain a clear and orderly work area.
