About The Position

The Dental Assistant Supervisor is responsible for the overall supervision, performance management, and operational oversight of the dental assisting team. This role provides direct leadership, coaching, and accountability to ensure high-quality clinical support, regulatory compliance, and efficient daily operations across the dental clinic. The Dental Assistant Supervisor manages staffing, scheduling, workflow coordination, and competency development while fostering a collaborative, patient-centered environment. The Dental Assistant Supervisor ensures consistency in clinical standards, supports and participates in continuous improvement initiatives, and partners with leadership, dentists, and hygienists to optimize patient care delivery. This role holds supervisory authority, including hiring, training, evaluating, and supporting the professional growth of dental assistants, while also providing high-quality dental care in accordance with national guidelines and organizational expectations.

Requirements

  • Current Dental Assistant certification/licensure, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 2 years of dental assisting experience
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory or leadership experience
  • BLS certification, required or must obtain within 90 days of hire
  • Strong knowledge of dental procedures, instruments, and infection control standards
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills

Responsibilities

  • Perform all Dental Assistant duties including but not limited to full clinical, radiographic, infection control, patient care, and administrative functions permitted under Idaho State Law and organizational policy & procedure.
  • Provides direct supervision, leadership, and performance management for the dental assisting team, including hiring, coaching, evaluating, and supporting professional development in alignment with organizational policies.
  • Oversees daily clinical operations by ensuring adequate staffing, managing schedules, approving time-off requests, and adjusting assignments to maintain efficient patient flow and high-quality care.
  • Ensures compliance with all regulatory and organizational standards, including OSHA, HIPAA, infection control protocols, Idaho State Law, and Heritage Health policies and procedures.
  • Leads onboarding, competency validation, and ongoing training for dental assistants, ensuring consistent clinical standards and adherence to best practices.
  • Monitors and maintains clinical quality and safety, including oversight of sterilization processes, equipment functionality, operatory readiness, and adherence to maintenance schedules.
  • Manages inventory, supply ordering, and vendor coordination, ensuring cost-effective purchasing and uninterrupted availability of clinical materials and equipment.
  • Collaborates with leadership, dentists, hygienists, and cross-department supervisors to optimize workflow, enhance patient experience, and support organizational goals.
  • Identifies operational challenges and implements process improvements, using data, feedback, and clinical insight to strengthen efficiency, quality, and team performance.
  • Addresses staff concerns, resolves conflicts, and provides real-time support to ensure a positive, professional, and patient-centered work environment.
  • Supports and participates in departmental meetings, audits, quality initiatives, and compliance reviews, ensuring documentation and follow-through on action items.
  • Communicates expectations clearly and consistently, ensuring dental assistants understand their responsibilities, performance standards, and organizational priorities.
  • Ensures completion and documentation of all required department testing, maintenance, and regulatory checks, escalating concerns as appropriate.
  • Maintains the ability to perform all duties of a Dental Assistant, providing clinical support as needed to maintain patient flow and operational continuity.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this position.
