About The Position

The Ketchikan Indian Community (KIC) is seeking a Dental Assistant/Receptionist to join their team. This role is primarily responsible for front desk duties, including patient check-in/out, insurance processing, referrals, and schedule management, with secondary responsibilities as a Dental Assistant. The ideal candidate will be task-oriented, self-starting, hard-working, and possess excellent communication skills. This position requires a high degree of professionalism, diplomacy, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Current valid State of Alaska driver's license with a record acceptable to KIC’s Insurance carrier.
  • Knowledge of accounting, office, and reception protocols.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of chairside dental assisting.
  • Knowledge of general dentistry aspects.
  • Knowledge of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  • Skill to operate software programs, specifically medical and dental.
  • Skilled in customer service and communication.
  • Skilled in administering dental x-rays.
  • Skilled and proficient with dental, scheduling, office, and other software.
  • Ability to organize to make the dentist's job easier and ensure procedural trays are in place in advance.
  • Ability to interpret, monitor, and enforce Dental standards.
  • Ability to communicate professionally over the telephone and in person in a positive and clear manner.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, including telephone, computer operations, and in-person visits.
  • Ability to take verbal instruction and complete assigned projects by established deadlines.
  • Ability to be flexible to perform at the highest level as a team player.

Responsibilities

  • Welcome and provide information to visitors, vendors, and tribal members in person, by phone, or via social media.
  • Receive and route incoming correspondence and packages.
  • Answer and screen telephone calls for dental staff, responding to questions or directing callers appropriately.
  • Manage the Dental Clinic patient schedule, including appointment reminder calls, recording no-shows, referrals, and other statistics.
  • Maintain lab cases and schedule accordingly.
  • Ensure the cleanliness of the Dental Clinic, including all work surfaces and shelving.
  • Provide general clerical support, including answering phones, filing, typing, ordering office supplies, and running errands.
  • Assist with inventorying and ordering supplies and medications, and maintain vendor relationships.
  • Unpack and restock dental supplies daily, ensuring adequate inventory levels.
  • Perform Quality Assurance activities such as monthly outdate checks, dental storage area inspections, refrigerator temperature monitoring, and dental machine accuracy checks.
  • Maintain dental equipment in a clean and operative condition and ensure adequate supply levels.
  • Prepare patients and operators for dental treatments by laying out instruments and materials.
  • Assist the dentist at chair-side during all phases of general dentistry, utilizing four-handed dentistry techniques.
  • Pass instruments and materials to and retrieve them from the dentist.
  • Keep the intra-oral area of operation clear using high-speed evacuator, suction tip, and irrigation.
  • Retract tissue, tongue, and cheek during procedures.
  • Maintain aseptic conditions during surgical procedures, stabilize tissue, and cut sutures.
  • Monitor patient condition during treatment for signs of distress.
  • Operate dental x-ray equipment to take intra- and extra-oral radiographs.
  • Pour and trim models for impressions and construct custom impression trays.
  • Take preliminary impressions for study models.
  • Remove sutures and place/remove rubber dams.
  • Obtain and record pre-operative and post-operative pressure and pulse of oral surgery patients.
  • Relay dentist's instructions to patients for post-treatment care.
  • Instruct patients in brushing/flossing techniques and care of prosthodontic appliances.
  • Record information on prescriptions and other forms for dentist signature.
  • Schedule follow-up appointments as necessary.
