About The Position

This position is responsible for providing safe, timely, and efficient courier, mail, and logistics services in support of Public Health operations. The role involves transporting vaccines, laboratory specimens, medical supplies, equipment, confidential records, and other program materials to and from various Public Health clinics, healthcare providers, laboratories, and city facilities. The delivery clerk also performs inventory support functions, assists with loading and unloading materials, operates and maintains courier vehicles and mail equipment, and ensures all activities comply with applicable legislation, organizational policies, cold chain requirements, and health and safety standards.

Requirements

  • Previous experience in a mail room and as a courier in relation to duties listed above, normally acquired through a combination of education or related work experience.
  • Ability to read and understand written and verbal instructions for the operation of simple equipment or the completion of routine office functions such as filing; write and convey messages.
  • Must possess Class "G" Drivers' License valid in the Province of Ontario.
  • Must provide a clean driving record certificate.
  • Must be physically fit and physically capable of lifting heavy items.
  • Must have a pleasant, courteous manner and relate well to others.

Responsibilities

  • Operating a commercial vehicle to provide courier services, including the pick-up and delivery of mail, vaccines, laboratory specimens, medical supplies, equipment and program materials between Public Health facilities, healthcare providers, laboratories, Canada Post and other city locations.
  • Postmark all outgoing mail for Canada Post with the correct amount of postage for mailing in Canada, USA, Registered and International mail.
  • Operate and maintain postage machine; replenish postage in postage machine; maintain a daily log of postage costs for monthly distribution to program areas.
  • Transport laboratory specimens to municipal and provincial laboratories in accordance with established handling, transportation and chain of custody procedures.
  • Safely collect, handle and transport vaccines, sharps and other biomedical materials in accordance with applicable legislation, Public Health standards and organization procedures, including cold chain requirements.
  • Service community sharps disposal kiosks by collecting, transporting and replacing sharps containers in accordance with applicable legislation, infection prevention and control practices and organizational procedures.
  • Collect and transport confidential papers and files in accordance with city policy and procedures.
  • Deliver equipment, supplies, educational materials, displays/presentation boards as requested.
  • Load, unload, transport, store and distribute supplies and equipment. Assist with inventory management activities, including stock replenishment, inventory counts and the movement of materials between storage locations.
  • Perform daily vehicle inspections (circle checks), identify maintenance or safety concerns, maintain vehicle cleanliness and promptly report defects, collisions or incidents to the supervisor.
  • Work in accordance with the provisions of applicable Health and Safety legislation and all City of Hamilton corporate and departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Perform other duties as assigned which are directly related to the major responsibilities of the position.
