About The Position

The Deli Manager manages the day-to-day operations of the Deli and Fresh Food Department. This role combines culinary execution (including hot/cold bar and fry cook supervision) with full managerial responsibilities, including scheduling, inventory control, payroll tracking, merchandising initiatives, and direct team performance management.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older (Required for food service management and commercial kitchen equipment operation).
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Proven experience in a grocery store or retail environment in a leadership role within the deli department, including direct experience with hot/cold bar execution and fry cook supervision (Must be supported by resume).
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English proficiently to communicate expectations, log records, and follow instructions.
  • Baseline math literacy (counting, addition, and subtraction) for financial logs and scheduling metrics.
  • Current Food Manager Certification, or the ability to successfully obtain it within 12 months of hire.
  • Ability to move, lift, or handle kitchen crates and product boxes weighing 0–50 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 pounds (with or without reasonable accommodation).
  • Full structural access to the selling floor, stock areas, and cash registers.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and bend over a kitchen worktable or hot line for the entire duration of a shift (with or without reasonable accommodation).
  • Comfort working within shifting temperature zones, including walk-in freezers/refrigerators (less than 32°F) and close proximity to commercial deep fryers or rotisserie ovens (greater than 90°F).
  • Flexibility to dependably work flexible, varied hours as business dictates, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Organize and execute all daily administrative and operational duties throughout the Deli Department, including weekly payroll, associate scheduling, and tracking performance against sales goals.
  • Administer employee development by identifying improvement opportunities, providing actionable feedback, coaching, and implementing corrective action plans.
  • Train personnel for efficient daily operations, optimal freshness, and excellent service presentation. Ensure all team members comply with health department, OSHA, and food safety standards.
  • Protect company assets by monitoring inventory, reducing shrink, and immediately notifying store leadership regarding team member theft, customer shoplifting, or unauthorized markdowns.
  • Supervise and assist with food preparation in the department, including recipe compliance, prepping, fry cooking, and hot/cold bar presentation.
  • Devise and implement fresh food merchandising strategies to drive sales while maintaining impeccable cleanliness, dating control, and structural layout.
  • Manage stock levels, complete periodic inventory tracking checks, and order kitchen supplies efficiently to minimize waste and supply costs.
  • Inspect kitchen equipment, tools, and utensils daily. Safely operate all machinery and promptly report required maintenance or repair items to store management.
  • Provide continuous attention to customer needs; greet, assist, and thank customers in a prompt, courteous, and friendly manner.
  • Maintain operational understanding of company purchasing, register, and front-end transaction procedures (including cash, cards, SNAP EBT, WIC, and coupons).
  • Audit and enforce proper sign and pricing accuracy within the department. Report formatting or scanning discrepancies to the Pricing Coordinator.
