About The Position

Mystic Seaport Museum is seeking SABINO deckhands for its Fall season, running from August through mid-October. Deckhands will be responsible for general shipboard duties, including cleaning, daily maintenance, and line handling. A key responsibility will be delivering a harbor tour to Museum visitors while underway. Deckhands will also assist the captain in ensuring the safety of the vessel and passengers during boarding and while underway. SABINO is a 56’ historic wooden steamboat with diesel electric propulsion, operating several short trips and two longer trips daily. The operating season is from mid-May through early October. This is not a live-aboard position, though on-site housing may be available. Applicants must be at least 18 years old. The work involves extended periods outdoors in all weather conditions during spring, summer, and fall. This position requires the ability to maintain high levels of visual and mental concentration for extended periods and necessitates positive interaction with the public. The incumbent will interact with a broad range of individuals, including fellow staff, visitors, volunteers, trustees, and vendors, and must exhibit a high degree of professionalism at all times, as the reputation of Mystic Seaport and the Watercraft Area is at stake.

Requirements

  • Public speaking skills for delivering a tour of the waterfront to Museum visitors.
  • Communication and customer service skills.
  • Willingness to undergo scheduled and random drug testing (pre-employment USCG drug test and enrollment in the Museum's random pool is mandatory).
  • Ability to lift moderately heavy loads.
  • Must be able to access boats, floats, and bilges.
  • A positive attitude and strong work ethic.
  • Ability to work weekend and evening hours.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.

Nice To Haves

  • Boating experience and basic seamanship skills.
  • Knowledge of Mystic Seaport Museum and the Mystic River.

Responsibilities
