This role is responsible for the overall safety of the towing vessel and the safety of all coworkers. The Deckhand will inform the Master-on-Duty of any unsafe or hazardous conditions on the vessel and report/correct any hazardous or unsafe conditions when able. Key duties include making and breaking tow for customer vessels and other EMS boats, picking up and delivering barges, performing look-out duties, tying lines, operating winches, handling lines, performing routine maintenance on critical systems, inspecting firefighting and lifesaving equipment, maintaining the engine room, performing housekeeping duties, participating in drills and safety meetings, learning emergency procedures, and understanding PPE usage. The role also involves ordering stores and supplies, taking on fuel/water/oil, and providing training to new hires and trainees. Continuous safety inspections of equipment and vessel structure are also a core responsibility.
