About The Position

As the Deckhand, this is an entry-level marine construction position where you will be on a vessel and will be responsible for supporting the safe operation, maintenance, and productivity of dredging equipment and vessel operations. Working under the direction of the Dredging Operator and vessel leadership, this position assists with equipment inspections, routine maintenance, dredging activities, deck operations, material handling, and general vessel upkeep. You will play an important role in maintaining operational efficiency, supporting safe work practices, monitoring dredging equipment, and ensuring the dredge and related systems remain in good working condition. This position works closely with vessel crew members to support dredging projects and contribute to the successful completion of marine construction operations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid state driver’s license and qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of the Company’s Driving Policy.
  • Ability to pass drug, driving, and background screening.
  • General knowledge of dredging operations.
  • Knowledgeable with handling power/hand tools.
  • Basic knowledge of servicing engines and generators.
  • General knowledge of pump packing and seals.
  • General knowledge of mechanical systems, operations, and maintenance.
  • Ability to complete general equipment inspection and maintenance.
  • Good working knowledge of Atchafalaya River and the Atchafalaya River Bar Channel.
  • Ability to work a rotating schedule and live on vessel for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
  • Ability to operate a variety of equipment utilized in dredging.
  • Ability to observe safety and security procedures, determine appropriate action beyond guidelines, report potentially unsafe conditions, and to properly use equipment and materials.
  • Ability to work with accuracy and thoroughness, to see ways to improve and promote quality, and to monitor own work.
  • Ability to work safely and efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to perform work in a timely manner, practice independent judgment and make decisions.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year experience as a Deckhand or dredge operator preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and service dredge engines and equipment.
  • Frequently monitor all dredging equipment.
  • Handle deck-based dredge plant and operate deck machinery.
  • Complete general equipment inspection and maintenance.
  • Assist with shift inspections and shift maintenance duties.
  • Handle a variety of hand/power tools.
  • Sand, prime and paint equipment when needed.
  • Clean the vessel and assist with the handling supplies and equipment.
  • Complete daily paperwork verifying completed duties and responsibilities.
  • Assist the Dredging Operator with removing sand, gravel, or other accumulated sediment with a dredge.
  • Assist the Dredging Operator with operating a variety of equipment utilized in dredging.
  • Act as lookout and maintain watch on deck and for dredge plant.
  • Perform the job in a safe and seamanlike manner in accordance with all company policies and procedures and state and federal regulations.
  • Study the safety manual, company policy manual and other material provided by the company.
  • Ask for clarification or instruction on any procedures and/or policies.
  • Attempt only tasks for which he/she has been trained.
  • Assist crew when required.
  • Suggest corrective action to improve plant and equipment performance and assist with implementation.
  • Maintain a clean work area.
  • Cook breakfast, lunch and dinner daily upon request.
  • Work and live on vessel for extended periods of time.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Perform other duties as directed.
