About The Position

Newport News Shipbuilding offers a four-week, 80-hour Marine Trades Training (MTT) program for individuals interested in learning the deck electrician trade and pursuing full-time work with the company. The unpaid program is held at Virginia Peninsula Community College in Hampton, Virginia, and runs from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, on second shift. Deck electricians help install, repair, overhaul, and operationally test electrical systems on aircraft carriers and submarines. The work can include interpreting electrical schematics; installing lighting, receptacles, wireway racks, and electronic controls; performing preventive maintenance; rebuilding equipment; and welding studs used to mount equipment. Shipyard work may take place outdoors in varied weather, at extreme heights on scaffolding, ladders, or elevated platforms, and in confined ship spaces such as tanks, compartments, or voids. The work calls for attention to safety, precision, adaptability, and physical agility. The position requires willingness to work any shift and overtime as needed. The training program itself is unpaid and does not indicate that the trainee receives a paid position during the course.
