Within defined guidelines and framework, provides decision support for business areas across the enterprise. Staff in this area will be responsible for applying mathematical and statistical techniques and/or innovative /quantitative analytical approaches to draw conclusions and make 'insight to action' recommendations to answer business objectives and motivate change. The essence of work performed by the Decision Science Analyst involves gathering, manipulating, and synthesizing data (e.g., attributes, transactions, behaviors, etc.), models and other relevant information to draw conclusions and make recommendations resulting in implementable strategies. The internships will be based at the USAA Corporate Headquarters in San Antonio, Texas. Interns offered full-time roles may have the opportunity to work out of one of USAA’s satellite locations.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university, and plan to graduate after the final day of the internship.
  • Graduation date cannot be prior to August 13, 2027
  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher in quantitative analytics field such as Economics, Finance, Statistics, Mathematics, Actuarial Sciences, Operations Research, Data and/or Business Analysis, Data Science, AI, or other quantitative subject area.
  • Up to 2 years of experience in data/analytics, or directly related functional business experience (i.e. P&C, Bank, Finance, etc.).
  • Foundational knowledge of statistical/mathematical decision making and/or testing methodologies.
  • Knowledge of data analysis tools, data visualization, developing analysis queries and procedures in SQL, SAS, BI tools or other analysis software, and relevant industry data & methods and ability to connect external insights to business problems.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduation date between August 2027 and June 2028
  • Knowledge of mathematical and statistical techniques and approaches used to drive fact-based decision-making.
  • Knowledge of data analysis tools, data visualization, developing analysis queries and procedures in SQL, SAS, BI tools or other analysis software, and relevant industry data & methods and ability to connect external insights to business problems.
  • Experience in one or more multifaceted scripted language (Python, R, etc.) and database query language (such as SQL, HQL, NoSQL, etc.) for performing statistical analyses and/or building and scoring AI/ML models

Responsibilities

  • Leverages business, analytical and technical knowledge to understand business objectives.
  • The business problems analyzed are typically segments of a larger problem with significant impact to current and/or future business strategy.
  • Applies quantitative analytical approaches to draw conclusions and make recommendations to answer the business objective and drive the appropriate change.
  • Under direct supervision and guidance, manipulates structured and unstructured data to enable sophisticated analytical solutions.
  • Supports the delivery of business insights using machine learning, simulation, and optimization.
  • Partners with senior team members to develop and deploy models within the Model Development Control (MDC) and Model Risk Management (MRM) framework.
  • Support maintenance of Information Asset Inventories to ensure data and assets are cataloged appropriately.
  • Support ensuring that information is delivered in accordance with Information Governance standards and data management practices as advised.
  • Support metadata repository maintenance and proper metadata association.
