About The Position

The Dean of Social and Behavioral Sciences is responsible for providing school leadership in support of the college’s strategic vision, mission, and goals. This position oversees and coordinates the following academic departments and activities: Communication, Criminal Justice, Education, Political Science, History, International Studies, Paralegal, Psychology/Addictionology, Social & Cultural Studies. This position establishes and maintains a positive teaching, learning, and working environment to serve faculty, staff, and students. The Dean provides instructional leadership and effective administration of assigned disciplines. This position promotes instructional goals and objectives conducive to student success. The Dean reports to the Vice President of Academic Affairs and supports the college administration.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited institution in a discipline taught within the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences
  • Three years of higher education teaching experience
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage budgets, supervise personnel, build teams, and lead effective project management
  • Demonstrated experience in creating an atmosphere of collegial decision-making with diverse constituencies
  • Evidence of commitment to support and respect for diverse populations
  • Experience with enrollment management, curriculum/program development, or and program assessment

Nice To Haves

  • Doctoral Degree from an accredited institution
  • Experience with faculty supervision including performance evaluations
  • A minimum of three years of department chair or related administrative experience in higher education
  • Community college teaching experience
  • Assessment and accreditation experience
  • Experience with digital learning courses

Responsibilities

  • Provides for the educational welfare of students and the professional needs of faculty and staff in the school.
  • Responsible for overall school operations in accordance with federal/state laws and regulations, college policies and procedures, contractual agreements, accreditation standards, and college mission and goals.
  • Represents the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences to internal and external groups.
  • Responsible for the comprehensive coordination and administration of assigned departments and programs within the school including: personnel matters, student interactions, supervision of faculty and staff; academic scheduling; facility planning; curriculum development, implementation, improvement, and assessment; mandatory reporting; budgeting and managing financial resources; selection and evaluation of faculty and staff; faculty advising; and strategic planning for the school.
  • Presents a positive image of the college and school while representing the college at various community and state events.

  • Assists the Vice President of Academic Affairs regarding instructional services, activities, needs, and issues.
  • Ensures school operations align with college policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Plans and organizes work to meet schedules and time lines.
  • Ensures timely completion of program reviews for the school to ensure the viability of academic programs.
  • Establishes school committees and advisory boards as appropriate.
  • Assists in the development of marketing strategies leading to program recognition and growth.
  • Initiates and maintains third party contracts in accordance with college policy.
  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Operationalizes student enrollment plan within the school.
  • Develops and administers school budgets.
  • Tracks faculty loads, reassignments, and overloads.
  • Works with academic departments to develop adjunct faculty pools to meet school needs.
  • Manages facilities in collaboration with applicable campus personnel.
  • Maintains current knowledge of higher education laws and regulations.
  • Involves appropriate internal and external stakeholders in the school’s decision-making processes.
  • Coordinates activities and professional development for faculty and staff.
  • Promotes excellence in teaching and advising.
  • Leads faculty and staff efforts to prepare students for academic success.
  • Facilitates academic partnerships and articulations.
  • Coordinates program and class schedules.
  • Monitors enrollment, cancels, and/or adds classes as appropriate.
  • Ensures the academic catalog accurately reflects current academic programs.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
