About The Position

The Dean of Students supports the school administration by promoting a positive school culture, improving student behavior, and addressing attendance issues. This position involves daily supervision of students, collaboration with staff and families, and leadership in the implementation of behavior and discipline plans. The Dean assists with school-based leadership and instructional initiatives, and serves as a visible, proactive presence throughout the school environment. The Dean of Students plays a vital role in supporting both student success and school safety through responsive and restorative practices. The Dean of Students will shadow the supervisory role and actions of the Principal and Assistant Principals. As needed, duties may include, but are not limited to, participating in and contributing to the design and monitoring of the School Improvement Plan.

Requirements

Minimum of three years of successful teaching experience.
Bachelor’s degree.
Valid Virginia teaching license.
Desire to become a school administrator.
Actively pursuing a Master’s degree, or post-Master’s certificate, in Administration and Supervision from an accredited institution.
Considerable knowledge of effective instructional and behavioral strategies, including best practices in classroom management and student discipline.
Working knowledge of school laws, division policies, and regulations.
Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal).
Sound decision-making, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and interpersonal abilities.
Strong organizational and analytical skills.
Ability to evaluate discipline and attendance data for program improvements.

Responsibilities

Monitor and supervise student behavior throughout the school day and during extracurricular events (e.g., athletics, clubs, dances, concerts).
Implement and support the school-wide discipline plan to ensure a safe, respectful, and inclusive school environment.
Collaborate with teachers, parents, and staff to resolve behavioral and attendance issues.
Supervise students during and after school, including during dismissal, bus transitions, and after-school activities.
Lead initiatives to reduce disciplinary referrals through preventive and restorative practices.
Support instructional leadership and collaborate on effective teaching and learning strategies.
Prepare reports on discipline and attendance as requested by administration.
Use data to evaluate and improve school behavior and attendance programs.
Process student behavior referrals.
Maintain accurate records and documentation related to student behavior and interventions.
Provide direction to in-school monitors, security staff, and clerical personnel as needed.
Serve as a liaison between students, parents, school staff, and community agencies.
Monitor and analyze student behavior data to identify trends, assess program effectiveness, and make data-informed decisions to improve student outcomes.
Participate in school leadership team meetings, parent conferences, and other school-related activities as needed.
Monitor lesson plans to understand teacher intent to strengthen student experiences.
Observe student learning experiences in action by visiting classrooms.
Gain experience valuable to the pursuit of improving student experiences in the classroom by shadowing school administrators in their supervisory tasks to include their giving feedback to teachers on lesson effectiveness.
Participate in recruitment, interviews, and selection of staff hiring under supervision of the School Principal.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
