About The Position

The Dean of Students at Stephens Elementary is responsible for promoting student success through research-based, positive, safe, and kid-friendly approaches that create a productive school environment. This role involves overseeing student discipline, communicating effectively with families and staff, and assisting in the general administration of the school. The Dean also plays a role in encouraging community involvement in educational program development and ensuring adherence to school rules and conduct codes.

Requirements

  • Valid Arkansas Teaching License in any K-5 grade area.
  • Master’s degree or higher with approval for Arkansas certification as an Assistant Principal preferred.
  • At least three (3) years successful experience as a teacher and/or administrator in an urban school district.
  • Evidence of a strong commitment to quality desegregated and alternative education.
  • Knowledge of school curriculum; of current educational theory and practice; of cultural, socioeconomic, ethnic, and gender differences.
  • The ability to apply this knowledge when working with faculty, students, parents, administrators, community members, and support staff to implement school programs and curriculum.
  • Commitment to staff development demonstrated by a willingness to initiate, participate in, monitor, and maintain in-service activities.
  • Demonstrates the conviction that all children can and will learn in the Little Rock School District.
  • Evidence of successful experience with parent and staff involvement in decision making.
  • Evidence of successful experience in dealing with student’s social and emotional problems of at-risk and behaviorally challenging students.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with regular or special class teachers in the supervision, development, design, revision and monitoring of individual instructional and/or educational plans for pupils referred for evaluation and/or enrolled in special education.
  • Provide consultation where appropriate.
  • Must have the ability to work for the duration of the daily contracted time period, and to be physically present and at assigned work, with only infrequent unexcused absences, during the contract year.

Responsibilities

  • Promotes student success through research-based, positive, safe, and kid-friendly approaches that create a productive school environment
  • Oversees discipline of students (preventative and responsive efforts) and handles disciplinary problems as exhibited by students and assigns appropriate sanctions.
  • Effectively communicates with families, administrators, teachers, and school staff to ensure implementation of student success plans, discipline sanctions, and related supports.
  • Assumes the role of a substitute in the classroom as needed and supports Restorative Practice Classroom/ISS efforts.
  • Supervision of students at all times including arrival and dismissal.
  • Oversees safety issues and procedures to maintain a safe, orderly, and secure environment.
  • Assists with or prepares necessary reports or documentation as requested.
  • Assumes responsibility for encouraging and involving community, staff and where appropriate, students in decision making about educational program development and implementation at the building level.
  • Cooperates in conducting safety inspections and safety drill activities.
  • Assists in the administration of school rules regarding attendance.
  • Assists the Principal in the general administration of the school.
  • Meets with parents or other parties to resolve issues with students.
  • Assists with parent night activities and supervision.
  • Attends professional development and other meetings to address due process compliance and building level issues.
  • Works with the administrative team to support certified and classified staff in adhering to and applying effective practices within the LRSD Code of Conduct and school-wide behavior system efforts (ex. Leader in Me/PBIS, restorative practice sessions, structured breaks, check-in/check-outs).
  • Performs other duties as the Principal may assigned.
