About The Position

The Dean of Instruction provides leadership and oversight for the College’s academic, career technical, and health science programs. This position is responsible for advancing instructional quality, program development, and student success across four campuses and one instructional site within the College’s service area. The Dean oversees instructional operations, library services, and academic advising while supporting institutional effectiveness through the development of academic policies, strategic initiatives, and budget planning. Working closely with the Vice President of Instruction and Student Services, the Dean of Instruction helps guide the College’s academic vision, operational priorities, and long-term strategic direction.

Requirements

  • A master’s degree from an accredited institution is required, doctorate preferred.
  • Candidates must possess a minimum of five (5) years of teaching experience, ten (10) years of progressively responsible administrative experience in educational administration.
  • Experience overseeing or supporting academic transfer, career technical, and/or health science programs and demonstrated leadership in developing / coordinating dual enrollment partnerships is preferred.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in computer applications and educational technology.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the College’s mission, vision, and community college philosophy.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions and exercise professional judgment.
  • Ability to implement innovative curriculum and program development strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, supervision, and strategic direction for all instructional programs, including academic transfer, career technical, and health science degree/certificate programs.
  • Collaborate with Associate Deans, Division Chairs, faculty, and staff to develop, implement, evaluate, and continuously improve instructional programs and services while maintaining established academic standards.
  • Ensure the effectiveness, quality, and consistency of instruction through assessment, program review, student learning outcomes, and continuous improvement processes.
  • Lead instructional strategic planning efforts and support college-wide planning initiatives by developing and implementing annual goals, objectives, and strategies aligned with the mission of the College.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional policies, Alabama Community College System (ACCS) policies, and regional and programmatic accreditation standards.
  • Coordinate accreditation reporting and related activities as required.
  • Use labor market data, advisory committee input, and community partnerships to ensure instructional programs remain current, relevant, and responsive to workforce and transfer needs.
  • Collaborate with the Vice President of Instruction and Student Services, Dean of Students, and other administrators to promote student success, retention, completion, and engagement.
  • Assist in the development of course schedules, faculty assignments, instructional delivery methods, and related academic operations to support student and institutional needs.
  • Lead and expand dual enrollment programs through partnerships with secondary schools, ensuring alignment with academic standards, student success initiatives, workforce readiness goals, and equitable access to college-level opportunities for diverse student populations.
  • Recruit, supervise, support, and evaluate faculty, staff, and direct reports while fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, collaboration, and excellence.
  • Provide leadership for faculty development initiatives, including orientation, mentoring, professional development, and instructional improvement opportunities for full-time and part-time faculty.
  • Develop and maintain effective communication and positive working relationships with faculty, staff, students, administrators, external agencies, educational partners, and community stakeholders.
  • Represent instructional divisions in meetings, committees, and community activities, and communicate significant developments, concerns, and recommendations to the Vice President and other college administrators.
  • Ensure the appropriate and timely flow of information to and from the College’s instructional divisions.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision of instructional policies, procedures, and operational practices.
  • Assist in the development of promotional, recruitment, and public information materials related to instructional programs and academic initiatives.
  • Develop, manage, and monitor instructional budgets and resources in accordance with institutional priorities and planning processes.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation related to instructional programs, personnel, accreditation, compliance, and budgeting.
  • Promote ethical leadership, professionalism, integrity, equity, and respect in all interactions and decision-making processes.
  • Support the integration of instructional technology, innovative teaching practices, and data-informed decision-making to enhance teaching and learning outcomes.
  • Engage in professional development and leadership activities at the local, state, regional, and national levels to remain current on higher education trends and best practices.
  • Develop and manage annual instructional budgets in alignment with the College’s strategic planning and institutional priorities.
  • Supervise the expenditure of funds from the annual budget for instructional programs and instructional support units.
  • Participate in leadership and professional development activities at the state, regional, and national levels to support continuous growth and institutional effectiveness.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the College President or the Vice President of Instruction and Student Services.
