About The Position

The Dean and Director of the Preparatory Division provides artistic, academic, and operational leadership for Juilliard’s preparatory education programs. The Dean and Director of the Preparatory Division serves—internally and externally—as an advocate, leader, and effective spokesperson for the Division and is a key member of Juilliard’s leadership team. The Dean and Director will work to advance a plan for the Division that provides students with transformational artistic experiences, engaging foundational to advanced academic offerings, enhances faculty creative activity, and furthers the School's national and international reputation. Serving as an important pipeline of talented students for the collegiate-level Music Division at Juilliard, Preparatory students go on to top colleges, universities and conservatories around the country. The Dean and Director reports to and works closely with the President and Provost to develop and carry out the Preparatory Division’s mission and vision, and plays a key role in recruitment, fundraising, and strategic planning. The position is year-round and full-time.

Requirements

• Ability to skillfully lead, engage, and effectively connect with a large and diverse population of students, parents, faculty, and staff.
• Substantial experience working within the preparatory education setting, including working knowledge of laws and policies affecting minors in an educational setting.
• Substantive experience performing and teaching classical music at a high professional level.
• Experience working with a large and diverse team of staff and faculty.
• Experience managing and tracking complex departmental budgets.
• Effective decision-making skills, including those regarding budget and personnel management, employment contracts and agreements, and curriculum development and implementation.
• Exceptional communication, organizational, and management skills, including highly developed verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience that reflects a sustained and ongoing commitment to access and opportunity for aspiring musicians.
• Access to and ability to engage with extensive network of professional artists in and beyond Juilliard.
• Strong computer skills including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Understanding of and commitment to the mission of The Juilliard School.
• Availability to work on weekends (this position follows a Tuesday – Saturday schedule).
• Degree in music performance, history, or education.

Responsibilities

• Work with the Directors of Pre-College and MAP to determine and implement the long-term vision of the Division.
• Exhibit a deep commitment to artistic excellence, creative enterprise, and community and culture in educating and training young musicians.
• Supervise staff and oversee day-to-day operations of the division.
• With the Provost, oversee all faculty and staff employment decisions for the division, including new hires and changing of current employment contracts.
• Ensure curriculum and robust season programming that balances tradition with innovation while meeting the unique needs of the students and their development.
• Calibrate pedagogical and artistic decisions with budgetary needs, and guide staff and artistic teams to successfully produce high-level programs within the resources allocated.
• Supervise and facilitate adherence to current and future budgets for operations, financial aid, and work-study in collaboration with Pre-College and MAP directors.
• Oversee and maintain the highest standards for recruitment and admissions policies, procedures, and practices to ensure successful enrollment of qualified applicants.
• Understand and promote the overall health and well-being of students, and address the needs of developing young artists with empathy.
• Chair Preparatory Division admissions and financial aid committees, and make final decisions in collaboration with Artistic and Administrative Directors.
• Assure compliance with broader institutional policies, including code of conduct, academic policies and procedures, Title IX, and the school’s Working With Minors Policy.
• Collaborate with marketing and communications team to meet the recruiting, promotional, and relational goals of the Preparatory Division.
• Collaborate with the School’s development office regarding grant applications and reports, stewarding of individual donors, and in the coordination, planning, and production of events to meet the fundraising goals of the division.
• Oversee the Kayden Music Commissioning Program at Juilliard Pre-College as well as annual music commissions for Music Advancement Program.
• Oversee and develop relationships with external partners (i.e. partnership with Washington Heights Inwood Music Community Charter School (WHIN); commissioning collaboration with Interlochen, etc.).
• Coordinate interdepartmental collaborations between Preparatory Division and other members of the greater Juilliard community.
• Participate as a member of the Faculty Council and Studio Faculty Council.
• Serve as lead point of contact with the Tianjin Juilliard Pre-College administration.
• Supervise the accurate reporting of the faculty, coaches, and substitute hours to payroll office.
• Work with the Directors to oversee role and relationship of and between the Pre-College Family Association and MAP Family Association.
• Oversee planning and execution of the Preparatory Division Commencement ceremony.
