About The Position

Ameresco's Smart Building Solutions Group is seeking motivated students interested in gaining hands-on experience with building automation and direct digital controls (DDC). This internship is designed for students pursuing associate degree programs in HVAC, HVACR, Electro-Mechanical Technology, or Building Automation who want practical field experience working on real-world projects. This internship closely mirrors the first year of Ameresco's Level 1 DDC Controls Technician role. Interns will work alongside experienced controls technicians, engineers, project managers, and commissioning professionals while gaining exposure to the installation, startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintenance of building automation systems. This is a hands-on technical internship focused on meaningful project work rather than observation or shadowing. Depending on project assignments, interns will spend time both in the field and working with software, control systems, and technical documentation.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an Associate Degree program in: HVAC HVACR Building Automation Electro-Mechanical Technology Or a related technical field
  • Entering the second year of an applicable degree program by Summer 2027, or otherwise interested in obtaining internship experience in building controls.
  • Basic understanding of HVAC systems, electrical systems, controls, or related technical concepts gained through coursework, labs, or projects.
  • Ability to read and follow technical instructions and documentation.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to learn new technical concepts.
  • Comfortable working in both office and field environments, including mechanical rooms and active construction sites.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and work with tools and equipment commonly used in controls installation and service work.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel regionally as required for project assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the installation of control panels, sensors, actuators, field devices, and building automation equipment under the supervision of senior technicians.
  • Pull, label, route, and terminate control wiring in accordance with company standards and applicable electrical codes.
  • Perform basic device checkout, testing, and verification of installed equipment.
  • Support point-to-point testing, startup activities, and commissioning efforts.
  • Assist with identifying and resolving wiring, communication, and device-related issues.
  • Learn to use diagnostic software, test meters, and troubleshooting tools to support field operations.
  • Document installation progress through daily reports, as-built drawings, redline markups, and project notes.
  • Gain exposure to DDC programming, building automation system (BAS) graphics, network communications, and controls integration activities.
  • Collaborate with technicians, engineers, and project teams to support successful project execution.
  • Follow all company and jobsite safety requirements and procedures.
