DCS And Automation Engineer

Intersect
•$188,500 - $201,500

About The Position

As a DCS and Automation Engineer on Intersect's Engineering team, you will design and own unit- and plant-level automation architectures for clean energy and infrastructure assets. You will serve as the technical authority for instrumentation and control system design, ensuring power generation units, balance-of-plant equipment, and auxiliary systems integrate into supervisory control platforms and SCADA environments. The role combines detailed automation design with capital project execution across a multi-asset portfolio. You will work with internal development, engineering, construction, and operations teams, as well as external EPCs and OEMs, to translate operational demands into resilient automated control logic. The work supports reliable power dispatch, grid compliance, and operational flexibility. Intersect is a flexible-workplace company with team gatherings four times a year and hubs in the SF Bay Area, NYC Metro Area, Denver, Austin, Calgary, and Toronto. Candidates should be located within 60 miles of a listed hub to support in-person connections while maintaining a flexible remote culture.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation & Control Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • 10+ years of hands-on experience in control systems engineering, plant automation design, and system integration within power generation or heavy utility-scale/industrial environments.
  • Demonstrated mastery of unit- and plant-level automation, including DCS architectures such as Emerson Ovation, Yokogawa Centum, Siemens PCS7, ABB, or Rockwell PlantAx, as well as PLCs and OEM controllers such as CAT, GE, Woodward, and Solar.
  • Deep expertise integrating unit controllers with higher-level supervisory SCADA and EMS platforms using OPC UA, Modbus, DNP3, and IEC 61850.
  • Experience defining and reviewing control engineering artifacts for large capital projects, including P&IDs, control narratives, I/O lists, protection systems, API/ISO/IEEE compliance, condition monitoring and historian setup, high-speed data trap setup, HMI screens, and cause-and-effect matrices.
  • Strong collaborative communication skills and ability to lead technical discussions across EPCs, OEMs, and internal multidisciplinary teams.
  • Commitment to technical rigor, operational safety, and sustainable execution, aligned with Intersect's stated core values.

Responsibilities

  • Define unit- and plant-level DCS/PLC control architectures, hardware specifications, and network topologies for utility-scale power facilities.
  • Develop scalable standards for control narratives, sequences of operations, cause-and-effect matrices, and state-machine logic across generation assets.
  • Propose high-integrity communication protocols and system architecture for remote control room access.
  • Formulate machinery monitoring systems for online asset validation by integrating them into the DCS.
  • Lead integration of unit-level packaged controllers, including reciprocating engines, gas turbines, and BESS, into plant-wide DCS and supervisory SCADA networks.
  • Specify and configure industrial communication protocols including OPC UA, Modbus TCP, DNP3, and IEC 61850.
  • Prepare and review procurement specifications for DCS, SIS, plant data historians, alarm management systems, and other control systems.
  • Review and approve instrumentation and control system deliverables from EPCs, OEMs, and system integrators as the primary engineering authority.
  • Validate dynamic response, automated startup and shutdown sequences, and load-following capabilities during FAT and field commissioning.
  • Coordinate with process, mechanical, electrical, commissioning, and operations teams on functional safety, cybersecurity, and operational workflows.
  • Identify fleet-wide automation enhancements to improve asset efficiency, dispatch capability, and long-term operating performance.

Benefits

  • Equity grant providing a stake in the parent company.
  • 100% premium coverage for employees and dependents on medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Unlimited PTO and two company-wide breaks: Fourth of July and end of year.
  • Up to 12 weeks of fully paid parental leave, plus six additional weeks for birth parents.
  • Family planning and family care support through Carrot and Maven.
  • Free access to Spring Health, including five therapy and psychiatry sessions, and a Headspace account through Wellhub+.
  • $150 monthly food stipend.
  • $150 monthly reimbursement for cell phone and internet.
  • Pet insurance allowance.
  • Full home office setup.
  • Free access to UrbanSitter with $625 in quarterly company-paid credits.
