The Data Center infrastructure solutions business provides innovative and cost-effective solutions for building faster, smarter, and more resilient data centers. These modular infrastructure solutions scale AI and cloud computing capacity while minimizing capital risk and deployment delays. The business helps reduce costs, improve lead times, and lower construction risk through standardization and offsite manufacturing. SLB is seeking a highly qualified and motivated Project Engineering Manager to support this business.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university.
  • Full Professional Engineering License (P.Eng) is required.
  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in combined expertise in Structural design and engineering of equipment, Mechanical HVAC design, Mechanical Static and Rotating equipment design, and Mechanical Piping design and engineering, all with a focus on data center infrastructure.
  • Proven experience in managing multidiscipline engineering teams.
  • Experience in working with manufacturing shops both within own company and externally with third-party manufacturing companies.
  • Ability to produce drawings/sketches to illustrate design/ideas.
  • General knowledge and direct experience with the construction, operation, and maintenance of data centers and components.
  • Strong knowledge in structural analysis design and construction of structural steel frames, skids, and equipment modules.
  • Proven experience with troubleshooting of welded structures, in-depth knowledge of welding practices, and weld connection designs.
  • General Knowledge in HVAC systems and exposure to grills, plenums, fire, smoke dampers, electric heaters, configurations, etc.
  • Knowledge of industry standards, codes, and regulations, including Canadian (CSA) equivalents, such as AHRI, AISI, AISC, AMCA, ANSI, ASHRAE, ASME (specifically B&PV Section VIII, IX, B31.3, B1.9), ASTM, AWS, CIBSE, IBC, MFMA, MSS, OSHA, NACE, NFPA, SMACNA, TEMA, PFI.
  • Experience working with computer-aided design (CAD) and building information modeling (BIM) software.
  • Experience with fast-track design/build projects and/or multiple significant upgrade projects.
  • Direct experience in negotiating with regulatory agencies regarding departures from code and ultimately achieving design approval and permitting.
  • Mastery knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint) and PDF Editor (Adobe, Foxit, or other equivalent).
  • Operational knowledge in the majority of the following and ability to supervise at a management level in all areas: SAP (ERP Tool w/ Engineering Modules and Transactions), Solid Works, Autodesk Revit, Autodesk BIM 360, Autodesk AutoCAD, Navisworks Manager / Freedom, Bentley STAAD PRO (RISA would be considered but not preferred), Trane TRACE 700 and Carrier HAP (or other Heating and Cooling Load Calculation Design Software), CAESAR II, NozzlePro, FEPipe, 3E Plus, Pipe Data Pro, COMPRESS.
  • Fluency, both written and verbal, in English.

Responsibilities

  • Act as Technical Engineering Manager on complex/critical hyperscale Data Center Facility components, taking full ownership of all engineering activities undertaken by product and discipline engineers.
  • Work closely with Sales, Project Manager, other Project Services, Supply Chain, Quality, and Manufacturing Plant to execute the Product Delivery / Project in accordance with the as sold requirement and Client expectations within the mechanical and structural engineering domains.
  • Manage a team of engineers with multi-discipline engineering backgrounds.
  • Lead or oversee all mechanical and structural technical activities and discussions within the Team, Project, or Product Line.
  • Facilitate the integration of new team members as workload demands increase.
  • Mentor engineers within the team and provide training to others as required.
  • Be fully responsible for all mechanical and structural engineering technical aspects of the overall product line, both within and outside of dedicated projects.
  • Manage all mechanical and structural technical aspects and designs for all products within the product line portfolio across multiple orders / clients.
  • Plan and supervise the work of a team of staff (typically 10-12 technical engineers or designers) necessary to develop a new product or technology.
  • Plan and supervise the work of a technical team or staff to execute and deliver the technical portion for all orders / project demand on the product line.
  • Work with the supervisor and team members to identify and organize the best approach to executing project tasks, taking full responsibility for the detailed project plan and resources.
  • Ensure the team follows the applicable Product Development Process and adheres to all relevant Standards and Procedures.
  • Deliver or sustain the product or technology at the necessary quality level to meet business stakeholder requirements (e.g., requirements, timeline, and budget).
  • Provide technical documentation from the team that describes proven solutions for the project, including design files, technical drawings, and specifications documents as required by the EMS (Engineering Management System).
  • Monitor and guide good working practices relating to QHSE, technical rigor, professional behavior, and performance of direct reports.
  • Maintain the necessary level of expertise for self and team through training and development as appropriate for project execution.
  • Set annual objectives and perform regular performance appraisals for the assigned team with the N+1 supervisor.
  • Ensure employees are up to date with CNP (Career Network Profile), Career Portfolio, SETC (Slb Engineering Technical Career Ladder), and SCMi.
  • Understand client’s technical requirements during a proposal phase and lead the engineering team in developing the required engineering documentation to cost the project within domain disciplines.
  • Understand the as sold engineering scope of supply and communicate to the engineering team on the project after project award.
  • Ensure the project or order is being executed in accordance with product line procedures, work instructions, forms, design requirements, and client’s specifications.
  • Ensure engineers and technical staff properly use DIRs, develop BOMs, and Part Numbers with SAP to communicate all mechanical / structural technical requirements to the manufacturing plant.
  • Ensure engineers and technical staff follow SAP EWRs (Engineering Work Request) and ECNs (Engineering Change Notifications) as per department procedures.
  • Generate and develop the project engineering scope of work and execution plan for each order / project within the product line as it relates to the mechanical / structural domain.
  • Distribute engineering activities among mechanical / structural disciplines: specifically structural, mechanical-HVAC, mechanical-piping.
  • Lead mechanical / structural engineering teams formed by engineers in different locations.
  • Hold regular follow-up engineering meetings, internally (with team, management, project) and externally (with the client or vendors).
  • Contribute to the overall technical requisition and scope of work to subcontract specialist engineering activities to outsourced companies or develop and deliver if within only mechanical / structural domain.

  • Provide department and/or project hour estimating, planning, and forecasting for mechanical and structural related engineering functions.
  • Review, approve, and control man-hour bookings on a project for disciplines under direct management.
  • Schedule engineering activities (inputs, outputs, and effects on other disciplines or functional areas), understanding the needs of various projects and prioritization.
  • Ensure engineers properly define the engineering document list for each project and proposals placed on the product line as it relates to mechanical and structural deliverables.
  • Work together with Document Control to monitor engineering progress.
  • Coordinate design reviews, safety studies, and lessons learned for the product line within discipline domain(s).
  • Participate in manufacturing constructability reviews with the plant or 3rd party fabrication.
  • Resolve mechanical / structural technical conflicts as they arise within the product portfolio.
  • Manage and/or ensure engineers are following engineering change management procedures and generate MOCs as required.
  • Write or supervise the development of technical requisitions for all types of major equipment to be purchased by supply chain as it relates to mechanical / structural domains.
