About The Position

The Senior DB2 database administrator position requires in-depth knowledge of IBM DB2 database background using with IBM Utilities and BMC tools. This is a remote position supporting the DESTINY application team for the DC Government client. The role involves optimizing database queries, stored procedures, packages, and triggers, and working closely with developers to integrate enhancements, fixes, and new functionalities. The administrator will ensure application releases and data model changes are synchronized, maintain data integrity, and enforce database security standards consistent with DC government policies. Responsibilities include supporting compliance with privacy and data protection rules, using DB2 monitoring tools to identify performance bottlenecks, analyzing SQL performance, tuning databases, and supporting modernization efforts for the DESTINY system. Collaboration with infrastructure teams on server performance, storage, and network connectivity is also required, along with implementing schema modifications and providing technical support to District agencies and stakeholders. The role may involve coordinating activities of application developers, identifying best practices, delivering support for industry-specific applications, and interacting with executive-level users. The position may also function as a niche technical SME.

Requirements

15+ years of strong hands-on experience with IBM DB2 (LUW or z/OS depending on environment).
Expertise in database design, data modeling, schema management, and SQL optimization.
Knowledge of high-availability technologies (HADR, replication, failover, clustering).
Experience supporting complex, transactional, high-volume systems(government or DMV systems ideal).
Familiarity with ETL processes, Data Mining, Data Storage, Data warehousing.
Knowledge of IBM batch jobs, and integration with enterprise applications.
Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and performance tuning skills.
Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related field or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

Support the DESTINY application team by optimizing database queries, stored procedures, packages, and triggers.
Work closely with developers to integrate enhancements, fixes, and new functionalities aligned with business needs.
Ensure application releases and data model changes are synchronized with database environments.
Maintain data integrity through robust data validation, referential integrity, and error-handling practices.
Enforce database security standards, user access controls, and audit requirements consistent with DC government policies.
Support compliance with privacy and data protection rules applicable to DMV-related personal information.
Use DB2 monitoring tools to proactively identify performance bottlenecks.
Analyze SQL performance, query execution plans, and recommend optimizations.
Tune databases, memory pools, indexes, and storage structures for improved system throughput.
Support ongoing fixes, enhancements, and modernization efforts related to the DESTINY system.
Collaborate with OCTO infrastructure teams on server performance, storage, and network connectivity affecting DB2.
Implement schema modifications, table restructuring, indexing strategies, and partitioning as required.
Provides technical knowledge and support to District agencies, personnel, and additional stakeholders.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
May coordinate activities of application developers.
Able to identify best practices and standards for the use of the product.
Delivers support and design for industry specific applications that require integration with statewide systems or applications.
Interacts with executive level business users or technical experts.
May function as a niche technical SME (Subject Matter Expert).
