About The Position

The Daytime Shelter Associate position at Samaritan House, part of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Denver, is responsible for maintaining structure and order within the shelter's living environment by following established procedures and guidelines. This role involves accurate and timely completion of all required documentation, including entering participant information into daily logs. The associate must stay informed about ongoing events by reading previous logs and consistently enforce shelter rules. Key responsibilities include responding appropriately to needs and crisis situations, mediating interpersonal problems, and summoning emergency personnel when necessary. The position also focuses on making volunteers and guests feel welcome, communicating with other staff to resolve participant issues, and completing necessary records and reports, both manually and on the computer. Additionally, the associate will distribute and inventory supplies, provide information and referrals, and keep their supervisor informed of shelter developments. The role requires supporting and adhering to Catholic Charities’ vision, mission, values, and Code of Ethics, reflecting a commitment to dignity and respect for all individuals. It also involves using creativity and innovation in program development and service delivery, maintaining confidentiality of participant and agency information, and ensuring regular and predictable attendance. Adherence to agency confidentiality and HIPAA expectations is mandatory. The associate will also be responsible for answering the phone, providing internal and external referrals to community partners, and assisting the safety desk with verifying urine analysis results and completing breathalyzers.

Requirements

  • Experience working with people in crisis
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful and/or emergency situations
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing
  • Basic knowledge of word processing and typing ability to enter participant information
  • Knowledge of the service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics and the appropriate techniques and practices for the participant population.
  • Ability to interact effectively as a team member and independently with Agency staff and with a diverse participant base.

Responsibilities

  • Follows procedures and guidelines set forth in operating guidelines manual(s) to help maintain structure and order in the living environment
  • Accurately and promptly completes all required documentation/data, including entering relevant participant information in daily logs before ending shift assignment.
  • Maintains current knowledge of on-going events and changes by reading old logs
  • Enforces shelter rules uniformly and consistently.
  • Responds appropriately to needs and crisis situations, such as mediating basic interpersonal problems between participants and summoning emergency personnel
  • Strives to make volunteers and guests feel welcome.
  • Communicates with other staff to resolve problems with individual participants.
  • Completes necessary records and reports, including on the computer or manually, as directed.
