About The Position

This is a full-time position in Glenwood, Ia. The hours are Monday-Friday 8am-4pm. The Day Hab Instructor is responsible to the Day Services Team Leader. This is a full-time, paraprofessional position. The role involves providing direct individual training to develop/maintain skills in areas identified and requested by the individual’s team, including training in community settings. The instructor is responsible for providing a supportive and therapeutic atmosphere for the individuals receiving Day Habilitation Services. They will assist persons served in the development and implementation of personal goals and objectives, and methods for achieving them, carrying out instructional activities consistent with the individual’s training objectives. Documentation of individual performance, including activities pursued and behaviors observed, is crucial, as is keeping charting, incident reports, and daily reports up to date and accurate. The instructor will evaluate individual performance on an on-going basis and complete IPP and Progress information regarding the individual’s performance/participation in the program, returning it to the Program Coordinators. Discussion with the Day Services Team Leader regarding any problems/needs, significant changes, and accomplishments the individual has displayed is expected. Counseling individuals whenever the need arises and/or referring them to their Program Coordinators when the need indicates is also part of the role. The instructor will substitute for other Day Hab Instructors as needed, drive van routes as assigned, and assist with recreational activities. They will provide appropriate training and supervision when individuals are in community settings, obtain prior approval for all purchases of needed supplies, and provide first aid and medical attention where needed, alerting the Program Coordinator and Day Services Team Leader of the situation as needed. Responsibility for scheduling activities/outings, and reporting any concerns or activities suggested to the Day Services Team Leader is also included. Participation in regularly scheduled staff meetings and the agency's overall safety program, including becoming familiar with emergency drill procedures, training in CPR, and first aid procedures, is required. The instructor must be familiar with established behavior management techniques and crisis intervention strategies to ensure the physical safety of the individuals and self during a behavioral crisis situation, and display a willingness to participate in working with and training individuals with behavioral problems. Participation and cooperation with agency investigations are also expected. The role includes handling any other duties as assigned by the Day Services Team Leader and/or Executive Director. Essential functions include providing training and supervision in the development of identified skills, providing a supportive and therapeutic atmosphere, completing all data collection on goals for individuals served, and completing all progress and Individual Training Plan documentation to be turned into Program Coordinators. Assisting persons served in the development and implementation of goals and objectives, driving designated van routes as assigned/requested by Day Services Team Leader, and performing break duties as assigned are also essential. Maintaining compliance with Department of Transportation and agency Drug and Alcohol testing policies and procedures, and obtaining medication certification as required are necessary. Nishna Productions, Inc. exists to serve the needs of persons with disabilities, who may have behavior disorders resulting in aggressive outbursts. Each employee is required to physically assist in dealing with these behaviors if the situation warrants. Training persons served in identified areas, administering pertinent assessment tools, and completing electronic documentation are also key functions. All staff/volunteers must comply with HIPAA regulations, and access to Protected Health Information (PHI) is on a need-to-know basis with assigned security clearance levels.

  • Must conform to established DOT and agency Drug and Alcohol testing policies.
  • All agency staff are required to participate and cooperate with agency investigations. Confidentiality will be respected.
  • Maintain valid Iowa Chauffeur's License and have a positive driving record.
  • Must be considered insurable by agency's insurance carrier.
  • Individuals "must not have or be a carrier" of a serious infectious or communicable disease, such as, but not limited to, incurable, fatal, or debilitating diseases, which cannot be eliminated or reduced by reasonable accommodation. A current example would include, but not be limited to, tuberculosis. Determination of the existence of a serious disease is to be made by the proper medical authorities.
  • Must be able to travel from place to place, up to 70 miles.
  • Must have stamina and physical ability to load and unload, self and clients from vehicles.
  • Must be able to be physically active (walking, etc.) for periods of time not less than 10 minutes in a period.
  • Must be able to bend, squat, push, and pull.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to provide physical care necessary to individuals when performing direct care duties.
  • Ability to physically assist an individual to regain his/her balance, or to transfer from a sitting, standing, or prone position.
  • Demonstrate ability to perform routine cleaning tasks, such as vacuuming, mopping, and the use of cleaning agents, meal preparation, and clothing care.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous similar job experience in teaching or instructional-type setting, or an A.A. or B.A. Degree.
  • One-year experience as a direct care staff member in a human services agency, or in an educational agency.
