About The Position

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County has an opening for a full-time Day Camp Counselor working from the Jamestown, NY office. The Day Camp Counselor will work as a part of the 4-H Youth Development team at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County to assist in teaching youth 5-12 years of age a variety of activities and meeting the needs of the campers. This is a temporary position expected to begin mid-July with expected end date early September.

Requirements

  • High school or college student.
  • Desire and ability to work with children indoors and outdoors.
  • Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read, and write proficiently) in English.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to meet acceptable background check standards.
  • Proficiency with windows-based software including use of the internet and Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Excel.
  • Ability to perform the following functions with or without reasonable accommodation: frequently work in outdoor weather conditions including extreme heat, precipitation and cold; frequently lift, move, or transport facility materials, office materials, and perform tasks by frequently positioning self (for example, pulling, bending, reaching, touching, kneeling, using hands to feel/reach, etc.).

Nice To Haves

  • Interest in, or currently pursuing, an education in teaching or youth development.
  • First Aid and CPR certified.
  • 4-H Youth Development knowledge and/or background.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver age-appropriate educational activities to 4-H campers including, but not limited to arts and crafts, science experiments, cooking classes, woodworking projects, physical activity games and activities, etc.
  • Interact with program participants, parents, and volunteers representing CCE in a professional manner at all times.
  • Present as a positive role model for youth participants in all program activities and programs.
  • Participate in special events and programming, as assigned.
  • Assist with solving problems and resolving conflicts that arise within the program utilizing appropriate policies and procedures and with supervisor guidance as needed.
  • Assist with identifying, anticipating, recommending, and planning for program needs/supplies.
  • Assist with effectively managing program budget allocations.
  • Assist in identifying ways to reduce costs and maximize existing resources within the program and Association.
  • Assist with planning and preparing educational activities for 4-H campers.
  • Assist with program preparation and clean up.
  • Help to maintain a safe, positive, and supportive atmosphere during all activities.
  • Complete and submit accurate activity and progress reports, as requested.
  • Prepare and submit accurate expense reports, mileage reports, receipts/supporting documentation, and/or vouchers in a timely manner per established policy and procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all information and data collected, accessed and/or maintained.
  • Provide data and information to assist with preparation of reports, impact statements, and success stories for funders, advisory committees, Board, and others as requested.
  • Transport self and/or program materials/resources necessary for performing position responsibilities.
  • Participate in all required orientation, training, and/or in-service meetings and events, as scheduled/required.
  • Support the association to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Be familiar and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.
  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Cooperative Extension programs and other duties as assigned.
  • Conduct all programming and activities in accordance with applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations.
  • Aware of, and adheres to, established Cornell Cooperative Extension Association policies, procedures, processes and Skills for Success.
  • Represent Cornell Cooperative Extension to the public, community leaders, colleagues, volunteers, members of Cornell University faculty and staff, government officials and the general public in a professional manner at all times.
  • Perform all assigned duties in a professional, timely, and accurate manner.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance and punctuality.
