About The Position

The Day Camp Counselor position is responsible for the supervision of campers in a small group setting, aiming to build relationships and develop character in all YMCA constituents. Under the guidance of the Senior Manager of Youth Development, the Day Camp Counselor provides direct supervision of a group of children in a seasonal day camp. The role focuses on providing a quality experience for children and parents, emphasizing YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, caring, courage, and inclusion. Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Previous experience working with children, preferably in a day camp setting.
  • Desire and ability to work with children.
  • Ability to relate to one’s peer group, as well as ability to accept supervision and guidance.
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse Prevention training during Pre-Season Camp Trainings.
  • Must possess good character, integrity, adaptability, enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control.
  • Set a good example for campers and others including cleanliness, punctuality, and sportsmanship.
  • Positive, “can do” attitude which is demonstrated by a willingness to pitch in and help wherever needed as well as an ability to anticipate what is needed.

Nice To Haves

  • One year or more of college preferred.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the general safety and supervision of campers in assigned group.
  • Identify and meet each camper’s needs, including learning likes/dislikes, recognizing and responding to opportunities for problem solving, interaction between campers and staff, and creating great camp experiences for each camper.
  • Carry out camp program objectives, including establishing roles for supervising camper health, enforcing camp safety regulations, supervising all assigned aspects of the camper’s day, and instructing campers during emergency procedures.
  • Plan and implement program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with YMCA values.
  • Adhere to program standards, including safety and cleanliness standards.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings.
  • Supervise and participate in all assigned aspects of the camper’s day, which includes but is not limited to: Camper sign in and sign out; lunch times, extended am and extended pm duties as assigned.
  • Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.
  • Maintain positive relations with parents and other staff, modeling relationship-building skills in all interactions.
