About The Position

The Day Camp Counsellor - Recreation is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day operations of summer camps, providing a safe, engaging, and enriching experience for all participants. The role includes supporting program delivery, supervising campers, and ensuring a positive camp environment that promotes fun, learning, and teamwork.

Requirements

  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications related to position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Completed some high school.
  • Standard First Aid + CPR & AED (Intermediate First Aid).
  • Police check with vulnerable sector search
  • Child intervention check
  • Clearance through internal Salvation Army child & youth abuse prevention protocols.
  • Work within the total camp program and cooperate with other staff members.
  • Flexible and have a good disposition.
  • Able to maintain a responsible level of maturity and leadership.
  • Able to lift, carry or move up to 29 lbs.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous summer camp experience (or experience in other children/youth programs) is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning and leading camp activities, including sports, arts and crafts, team-building exercises, and other recreational activities.
  • Support the implementation of scheduled camp programs, ensuring they are engaging and inclusive.
  • Adapt activities to meet the needs and interests of all campers.
  • Provide active supervision to ensure camper safety at all times.
  • Foster a welcoming and supportive atmosphere, encouraging camper participation and collaboration.
  • Respond to camper needs, including providing guidance and conflict resolution as necessary.
  • Ensure a safe environment by following all health and safety protocols.
  • Monitor camper well-being, including proper hydration, sunscreen application, and injury prevention.
  • Respond to emergencies, administer first aid if certified, and report incidents as per camp procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with other camp staff to ensure the success of the program.
  • Communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and parents when required.
  • Attend all training sessions, staff meetings, and debriefs.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and incident reports.
  • Assist with camp setup, cleanup, and inventory management.
  • Provide feedback on programs and suggest improvements.
