About The Position

The YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit is a non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening the foundation of community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. This role involves counseling students with personal, behavioral, and psychological issues during camp, working with them one-on-one and in group sessions. The specialist will also provide resources and strategies to parents and camp counselors to support campers experiencing difficulties. This position supports the Y's mission of strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in social work, counseling, psychology, or other related field nearing completion.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Compassion and empathy for children.
  • Professionalism and discretion.
  • Good relationships with relevant social services.
  • Previous experience working with diverse populations.
  • Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
  • Commitment to inclusion and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in School Social Work may be advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Observe children struggling and model positive behavioral intervention strategies for counselors.
  • Counsel campers with personal and psychological issues affecting their performance, behavior, and socialization.
  • Communicate with parents and schedule meetings to provide resources for children with consistent issues.
  • Document interactions with campers using FYI forms, Incident Reports, and Behavior plans.
  • Maintain case files and reports to track progress and problems.
  • Support staff daily through behavior management, parent communication, staff communication, program implementation, and crisis intervention.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and provide professional development tools.
  • Assist camp staff with questions or concerns regarding campers or staff.
  • Meet weekly with the Director to discuss concerns and provide support.
  • Facilitate Social Emotional Learning activities and coach staff in SEL implementation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
