About The Position

The Database Administrator provides support to Bakersfield City School District staff and students by designing, administering, and securing district database systems, including business and student information systems. The position serves as the district’s advanced technical resource for the Aeries student information system and administers MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server environments. The role also develops reports and dashboards to inform instruction, operations, and decision-making, and develops and supports line-of-business applications, including artificial intelligence solutions. The Database Administrator defines and implements database interfaces and integrations, ensures data quality and security, supports reporting requirements, and works with district staff to define needs and deliver database solutions. The position supervises staff as assigned and reports to an assigned administrator. The role is based at the Education Center. The posting lists compensation of $47.46–$70.11 per hour.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, or a related area, or equivalent experience in an applied setting.
Recent full-time professional-level experience in complex database design, implementation, administration, and maintenance.
Fluency in SQL, including MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server; experience writing complex queries, views, stored procedures, and automated reports.
Experience providing advanced support for a business or student information system.
Experience with report development and data visualization tools, such as Crystal Reports, SQL Server Reporting Services, or Power BI.
Experience with relational, key-value, graph, vector, and time-series database structures.
Fluency in compiled and scripting programming languages such as C#, JavaScript, Python, or PowerShell.
Expertise designing, developing, and supporting applications and APIs that use database backends.
Working knowledge of network, server, and cloud infrastructure as it relates to database hosting, security, and connectivity.
Knowledge of student data privacy and security requirements, including FERPA, COPPA, and applicable California student privacy laws.
Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision and experience as a supervisor in a related area.
Recent experience preparing and presenting database, reporting, and technology training sessions to staff.

Responsibilities

Plan, prepare, define, structure, develop, and implement database systems.
Provide advanced technical support for the Aeries student information system, including local and hosted database administration, performance tuning, data integrity, upgrades, and escalated troubleshooting.
Administer MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server environments, including installation, configuration, user access, backup, recovery, patching, and capacity planning.
Define and implement interfaces and data integrations between Aeries and other district systems, including state reporting and third-party vendor data exchanges.
Test, troubleshoot, refine, and document systems; apply quality assurance and security standards to prevent data loss and minimize service interruption in the event of equipment failure.
Plan and develop test data to validate new or modified database applications.
Monitor system performance using appropriate utilities, online capabilities, and batch reports.
Resolve errors and interface problems and ensure integrated systems meet development standards.
Apply role-based access, least privilege, and data governance standards to protect student and staff data.
Develop, maintain, and automate custom reports, queries, and dashboards using MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, and Aeries reporting tools.
Consult with district staff to define functional requirements, perform data modeling, and implement final products.
Validate data accuracy and consistency across district systems and support Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP), state, and federal reporting requirements.
Supervise programming and other staff as assigned.
Maintain current knowledge of trends and best practices in database technology, data analytics, and artificial intelligence.
