About The Position

This is a MS SQL Server DBA III role largely responsible for providing operational database services to the organization. Some of the primary responsibilities of this role would include owning, tracking and resolving database related incidents and requests, fulfilling requests and resolving incidents within SLAs, reviewing service related reports (e.g.: database backups, maintenance, monitoring) on a daily basis to ensure service related issues are identified and resolved within established SLAs, responding to database related alerts and escalations and working with database engineering to come up with strategic solutions to recurring problems.

Requirements

  • Associates degree with 7- 10 years of experience in database support is MS SQL Server environments.
  • Experience in troubleshooting and resolving database integrity issues, performance issues, blocking and deadlocking issues, replication issues, log shipping issues, connectivity issues, security issues etc.
  • Experience in Performance Tuning, Query Optimization, using Performance Monitor, SQL Profiler and other related monitoring and troubleshooting tools.
  • Ability to troubleshoot SQL Server related CPU, memory, I/O, disk space and other resource contention.
  • Knowledge of backups, restores, recovery models, database shrink operations, DBCC and commands.
  • Experience in implementing and supporting operational automation.
  • Strong knowledge of how indexes, index management, integrity checks, configuration, patching. How statistics work, how indexes are stored, how they can be created and managed effectively.
  • Solid acquaintance with windows server, security delegation, SPNs, storage components.
  • Documentation skills for processes and procedures.
  • Experience in coordinating and executing installation, configuration, patching and upgrades.
  • Strong knowledge of SQL Server Database HA technologies, including AlwaysOn and Log Shipping.
  • Experience with virtualization technologies in a database environment.
  • Ability to handle multiple simultaneous projects with aggressive deadlines.
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues using Microsoft Support and other online resources.
  • Familiarity with data modeling and data mining.
  • Good knowledge of Database replication technologies.
  • Experienced distributed computing architectures.
  • Experienced in the underlying operating systems (Windows, Linux).
  • Experienced in structured Query Language.
  • Good database design experience.
  • Good understanding of database hardware design, including disk subsystems.
  • Basic project management skills, ability to develop, scope, schedule, communicate and deliver.

Responsibilities

  • Install and upgrade SQL Server RDBMS and related products: Keep SQL Server RDBMS at current release and maintenance levels; provide current & stable production and development environments.
  • Provide first-level application support: Resolve problems and answer questions related to the SQL Server RDBMS and platform environment; contact vendor support when necessary; facilitate application development and client problem resolution with optimum speed and efficiency.
  • Reorganize database structures as needed: Automate procedures at regular intervals; use tools to reorganize or de-fragment database table spaces, tables, and indexes; provide efficient database environment to maximize productivity and improve performance.
  • SQL Server RDBMS performance monitoring and tuning: Closely monitor performance; identify problems and implement solutions; ensure the database is running at optimum speed and efficiency.
  • Perform database refreshes upon request: refresh data from one environment to another at the request of the application development staff, execute necessary tasks to accomplish this, to minimize impact provide application development staff optimal development environment with current data.
  • Maintain database backup/recovery environment: Respond quickly to refresh data; verify implementation of correct backup strategy, develop recovery procedures; support recovery from loss of data caused by user or system error.
  • Experience working closely with a cross functional team consisting of employees, contractors, and vendors with various skills and disciplines.
  • Engages with IT external partners to ensure SLAs are met and company processes and policies are adhered to.
  • Ensure database availability, performance, and supportability can meet application requirements.
  • Ability to work with application groups to determine those requirements.
  • Engage with internal and external auditors on database security and compliance issues.
  • Performance tuning expert including performance issue identification and tuning.
  • Lead incident management efforts. Coordinate database resources and activities during infrastructure incidents.
  • Work with project leaders to determine DBA resource requirements for specific projects.
  • Identify and communicate team operational efficiencies by process improvements and/or implementing new technologies.
  • Tier 2/3 troubleshooting. When technical issues are escalated internally, you can work until resolution.
  • Clearly articulate requirements, issues, project status, etc. to non-technical management personnel.
  • Identify and communicate licensing, sizing, upgrades, etc. requirements to technology vendors.
  • Lead change management for the team. Participate in Production Change Control meetings and give input to scheduled changes across the department
  • Standard DBA tasks – installation, space management, backup & recovery, patching, upgrades, etc. in both Oracle and SQL Server environments
  • Participate in 24/7 on-call rotation.
  • Mentoring of junior Database Administrators.
  • Develop and maintain a DBA technical roadmap.
  • Accountable for hardware and/or software research and evaluation.
  • Writes and maintain documentation for standard procedures.
