About The Position

Shape Iowa’s history by managing data systems, maintaining accurate property records, coordinating GIS data, and assisting with program reviews and compliance activities. This role supports the identification, preservation, and protection of Iowa’s historic and prehistoric resources. The Data and Survey Manager has the opportunity to be involved in projects across the office as they handle the intake and sharing of documentation on Iowa’s cultural resources.

Requirements

  • Interest or background in history, preservation, or architecture
  • Meets the Secretary of Interior Standards for architectural historian, historian, architect or historic architect.
  • Experience working with databases or GIS tools with a focus on accuracy, data integrity, and analytical skills
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and able to interpret regulations while collaborating with diverse stakeholders

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in history, anthropology, archeology, architecture, curatorial/museum management, literature, English, art, natural history, architectural history, library science, or historic preservation, and experience equal to one year of full-time work in professional research, museum, education, editing, or other experience associated with history, anthropology, archaeology, architecture, architectural history, art, museums, historic sites, or historic preservation.
  • OR A total of five years of education and/or full-time experience (as described above), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in history, anthropology, archeology, architecture, curatorial/museum management, literature, English, art, natural history, architectural history, library science, or historic preservation equals one year of full-time experience.

Responsibilities

  • Support and maintain the Iowa Site Inventory and preservation databases
  • Ensure accurate, up-to-date records across systems (GIS, ESRI, Salesforce, and internal databases)
  • Assign and track site inventory information for historic properties
  • Respond to open records requests related to preservation data
  • Help provide outreach and education to local communities
  • Develop and maintain geospatial data systems and standards with other SHPO staff managing the GIS data
  • Create and upload GIS data from project reports
  • Identify opportunities to improve data quality and systems
  • Review survey reports and eligibility requests for historic properties
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to program applicants and stakeholders
  • Partner with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure compliance with state and federal preservation standards
  • Assist with National Register nomination and other historic preservation project reviews as time and expertise allows.
