About The Position

The Data Steward is responsible for monitoring and resolving issues with various accounting and insurance policy and claims administration systems. This position will assist in system setups as well as data quality and record processing. This position will participate in projects assigned to maintain key controls within the department.

Requirements

  • A four-year college degree is required; with a major in accounting, finance, data science or management information systems strongly preferred.
  • Ability to learn and understand various software applications including, but not limited to, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access and specialize insurance software as assigned.
  • Possess the ability to use technical tools to perform analysis and create efficiencies in reporting with a preference for Business Objects and Tableau.
  • Understand and access various data sources, using available reporting tools, to meet compliance, and accounting requirements and operational reporting needs.
  • Works well in a highly skilled team environment, has a readiness to learn new technology, and a profit-minded perspective are essential.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Interest in progressing towards CPA, CITP or CISA is preferred, though not required.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure proper recording and reporting of insurance information systems based on statutory accounting principles.
  • Develop an understanding of property and casualty insurance and assist with research, analysis, and implementation of data fixes to ensure proper reporting.
  • Identify potential problems, inefficiencies or risk and work with higher-level staff to resolve them.
  • Daily posting of journal entries & related reconciliation reports for policy, claim, commission and miscellaneous insurance and corporate information systems.
  • Understand rules, regulations, and procedures for systematically handling work.
  • Perform account reconciliations for assigned asset, liability, and expense accounts to ensure the accuracy of financial reports and to safeguard the assets of the Company.
  • Run and modify existing reports from financial reporting systems including the core insurance system, general ledger, business objects, and other online data access points.
  • Post journal entries, allocations and required supporting computations and assist other areas with this function.
  • Complete selected elements of the month-end close process.
  • Review, maintain and approve all vendor records in keeping with established procedures and controls.
  • Assist with reconciliation of potential issues and exceptions relating to the cash process and reporting and working with other areas to resolve.
  • Assist with PBC items for the company’s annual audit.
  • Identify areas of inefficiency to streamline results.
  • Be part of specialized project teams to achieve accounting department’s goals.
  • Other duties as assigned.
