Data Scientist 3

Grvty•Annapolis Junction, MD
•$131,000 - $161,000

About The Position

GRVTY is seeking a Data Scientist to support an NLP project focused on accurate, automated tokenization of language data from spoken and written sources. The role develops automated solutions to annotate language data with parts-of-speech information and improves existing models by evaluating their performance against human-generated annotations for speech and text. The work advances NLP capabilities and supports high-quality language processing. The position also involves developing methods to extract meaning and value from large datasets, drawing principled conclusions, and translating mission needs and analytic questions into technical requirements. The Data Scientist helps others interpret analysis appropriately, communicates complex technical information to non-technical audiences, and recommends among technical solutions while staying aware of Government collection, processing, storage, and analytic capabilities and limitations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with 10 years of relevant experience, or an associate degree with 12 years of relevant experience.
  • For a bachelor’s degree, the field must be mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, applied statistics, machine learning, data science, operations research, computer science, a related field such as computer information systems or engineering, or a physical/hard science or other science discipline with a substantial computational component and the required advanced mathematics and/or computer science coursework.
  • For degrees in related fields or sciences, qualifying coursework must include at least five courses in advanced mathematics (typically 300 level or higher, such as linear algebra, probability and statistics, or machine learning) and/or computer science (such as algorithms, programming, data structures, data mining, or artificial intelligence). Elementary or basic college-level math courses do not count toward this coursework requirement.
  • A broader range of degrees may be considered when accompanied by a Certificate in Data Science from an accredited college or university.
  • Relevant experience must include one or more of the following: designing or implementing machine learning, data science, advanced analytical algorithms, programming in at least one high-level language (such as Python), statistical analysis, data management, data mining, data modeling and assessment, artificial intelligence, or software engineering.
  • Experience in more than one relevant area is strongly preferred.
  • Active TS/SCI with polygraph.

Nice To Haves

  • Employ a combination of two or more skill areas: mathematical, computational, or statistical foundations; data processing, management, curation, description, visualization, workflow, or reproducibility; and modeling, inference, prediction, or domain-specific considerations.
  • Experience devising strategies to extract meaning and value from large datasets.
  • Ability to draw principled conclusions using mathematics, statistics, computer science, and application-specific knowledge.
  • Experience characterizing, exploring, and assessing large datasets through analytic modeling, statistical analysis, programming, or other scientific methods.
  • Ability to translate practical mission needs and analytic questions into technical requirements and help others interpret analysis.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical information to non-technical audiences.
  • Awareness of Government collection, processing, storage, and analytic capabilities and limitations.

Responsibilities

  • Develop automated solutions to annotate language data with parts-of-speech information.
  • Evaluate existing models against human-generated annotations for speech and text, and enhance model performance.
  • Devise strategies for extracting meaning and value from large datasets.
  • Use mathematics, statistics, computer science, and application-specific knowledge to draw and communicate principled conclusions from data.
  • Develop and implement qualitative and quantitative methods to characterize, explore, and assess large datasets in varying states of organization, cleanliness, and structure, accounting for the features and limitations of Government data holdings.
  • Translate mission needs and analytic questions about large datasets into technical requirements, and assist others in drawing appropriate conclusions from analyses.
  • Communicate complex technical information effectively to non-technical audiences.
  • Recommend among competing technical solutions while maintaining awareness of changing Government collection, processing, storage, and analytic capabilities and limitations.
