About The Position

Parafin is looking for a Data Scientist to join their team. The Data Science Team at Parafin plays a crucial role in the company's mission to grow small businesses by leveraging data to create fair, automated, and broad access to financial services. The team partners closely with leaders across the company to drive impact in areas such as Growth, Portfolio Monitoring & Servicing, and Infrastructure. This role involves designing experiments, building ML models, developing data pipelines, automating processes, and creating internal tools. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in statistical reasoning, business acumen, an engineering mindset, leadership, collaboration, focused execution, and AI tool fluency. Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science (or related fields).
  • Statistical Reasoning: Approach data analysis with a critical, intellectually honest eye, design concise metrics that guide decision making, use robust causal inference methods, develop valid and predictive machine learning models.
  • Business Acumen: Identify and effectively prioritize business problems, solve business problems using appropriate data science techniques, anticipate the impact of your work on financial performance, customers, and compliance obligations.
  • Engineering Mindset: Write legible, reliable, and tested code, build or source tools to boost the team's efficiency, contribute to model and data infrastructure design.
  • Leadership and Collaboration: Model Parafin's values of efficiency, intellectual honesty, accountability, and empathy, build trusted relationships with stakeholders, document work, seek feedback, and share learnings proactively.
  • Focused Execution: Prioritize high-impact use of your time, scope projects rigorously, act with urgency.

Responsibilities

  • Design experiments and analyses that expand access to capital while keeping the portfolio healthy.
  • Study the full merchant lifecycle to find where we can responsibly extend more capital.
  • Model how a prospective partner's portfolio would perform on our platform to size new opportunities.
  • Build ML models that forecast merchant repayment behavior to inform pricing and offer sizing.
  • Measure the impact of servicing efforts on merchant outcomes and balance recovery.
  • Build data pipelines that power analyses, dashboards, and ML models.
  • Automate processes such as lien filings, KYC checks, and fraud screens using APIs, ML, and LLMs.
  • Build internal tools like Streamlit apps, dashboards, and Slack bots.
  • Recruit exceptional talent, improve tools, and support team members through seminars and project reviews.
  • Lead projects from end to end, learn new methods, apply them across diverse areas, and implement them robustly.
  • Develop expertise in specific business areas while tackling projects across domains.
  • Mentor other DS members on the team.
