Data Scientist, Fleet Orchestration Algorithms

Zoox•Foster City, CA
•$177,000 - $217,000

About The Position

The Core Data Science team builds products and data assets that help teams measure and improve the autonomy and operational performance of Zoox’s fleet. The Data Scientist will develop algorithms for robotaxi fleet orchestration, including matching vehicles to riders and other missions, staging vehicles where and when needed, routing, and pricing. The role also models inputs to orchestration decisions, including rider demand, the value of data collected by the R&D fleet, servicing needs, events, and policies. The position serves as an optimization generalist who works with specialists in marketplace economics, forecasting, and autonomy. The role includes measuring algorithm impact on revenue, utilization, and rider experience, and contributing to evaluation and rollout of orchestration improvements. Algorithms will be evaluated through simulation, offline evaluation, and online experiments, with the opportunity to run on an autonomous fleet.

Requirements

  • PhD or MS with at least 2 years of relevant industry or research experience in operations research, robotics, controls, transportation, computer science, applied math, or a related field.
  • Deep expertise in at least one of the following: combinatorial or integer optimization, stochastic optimization or control, reinforcement learning or approximate dynamic programming, network flows, or marketplace/demand modeling.
  • Strong coding skills in Python, C++, or Rust, including writing clean, tested, version-controlled code.
  • Ability to turn ambiguous real-world problems into well-defined models and explain tradeoffs to non-specialists.
  • Good communication and collaboration skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Internship or research experience in ride-hailing, delivery, logistics, or autonomous-vehicle fleets, including dispatch, routing, rebalancing, or pricing.
  • Experience deploying algorithms in production or using them on real operational data.
  • Publications in operations research, transportation, or robotics venues.

Responsibilities

  • Design, prototype, and help deploy algorithms for vehicle assignment, staging, routing, and pricing.
  • Model orchestration inputs—including rider demand, data-collection value, servicing needs, events, and policies—as objectives and constraints.
  • Collaborate with specialists in marketplace economics, forecasting, and autonomy to turn their models into decisions acted on by the fleet.
  • Measure impact on revenue, utilization, and rider experience through simulation, offline evaluation, and online experiments.
  • Contribute to the evaluation and rollout of orchestration improvements.
