About The Position

Square's Sales organization is a key area of investment, and the go-to-market (GTM) Data Science team is central to its growth. This role reports to the Sales Data Science lead and involves owning a mature subdomain within the Sales function, while also contributing across the entire channel. The position combines the responsibilities of a trusted analytics leader for sales executives, providing ground truth on business performance, with the hands-on work of a data scientist tackling large, ambiguous problems from beginning to end. The team is at the forefront of AI, utilizing agents to automate mundane tasks and focus on high-impact, technically challenging work that drives the business forward. There are ample opportunities for growth, learning from sharp colleagues, and scaling impact beyond one's own domain.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years experience; or equivalent experience.
  • Advanced SQL and strong Python skills; proficiency across the full stack from ETL to analysis to visualization.
  • Strong statistical foundations: experiment design, causal inference, funnel and cohort analysis, and forecasting; ability to interpret results rigorously and explain underlying concepts.
  • Proven track record of managing large projects end-to-end with minimal direction.
  • Strong critical thinking skills: ability to discern when to move fast and when to slow down on critical problems, and to rigorously test one's own conclusions.
  • Exceptional communication skills: ability to present performance to executives, translate technical details for non-technical partners, and write comprehensive analysis documents.
  • Enthusiasm for building with AI and curiosity about its potential in data science work.
  • Curiosity about unfamiliar data and sales organizations, with the empathy to partner effectively with frontline teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience supporting sales, GTM, or revenue organizations.
  • Familiarity with fintech, payments, or the SMB merchant space.

Responsibilities

  • Own performance measurement for your subdomain: monitoring key metrics (wins, new revenue, funnel conversion, rep productivity), reporting against plan, and presenting findings in business reviews with sales leadership.
  • Lead investigations into performance questions (e.g., "why is X down?", "how can we improve Y?"), decomposing KPIs from first principles and designing experiments to validate solutions.
  • Take on large, ambiguous projects autonomously: scoping problems, identifying relevant data, critically assessing data limitations, and delivering results to stakeholders.
  • Own and evolve your subdomain's data foundation, and collaborate with Sales DS peers on shared metrics, attribution logic, and cross-cutting analyses.
  • Translate data into business context: communicating the story behind the numbers, challenging hypotheses with evidence, and building trust with senior sales, finance, and operations leaders.
  • Work AI-natively: utilize agents throughout the workflow and pioneer new applications of AI to complex sales domain problems.
  • Build self-serve dashboards and datasets to enable the sales organization to answer its own questions.
  • Elevate the team's analytical rigor, communication skills, and AI-enabled work practices.
