Data Scientist

Battelle•Columbus, OH
•$105,600 - $150,500•Hybrid

About The Position

Battelle’s Trust and Assurance Cyber Analytics Department develops embedded security solutions for government and industrial customers. The Data Scientist will work in Columbus, Ohio, with colleagues from quantitative disciplines including physics, computer science, electrical engineering, statistics, systems biology, and mathematics. The team works with data such as microelectronic images and schematics, signal data, text corpora, ontologies, and networks. The role applies machine learning, statistics, and data analytics to varied, data-driven cybersecurity problems. Projects may involve developing new methods and require learning beyond one’s area of expertise, conceptualizing problems, and evaluating what data can reveal. Cybersecurity interest is required; prior cybersecurity experience is not. The role supports continual learning, creativity, and risk-taking.

Requirements

  • PhD demonstrating analytical sophistication in a relevant field, such as statistics, mathematics, physics, computer science, electrical engineering, quantitative social sciences, or computational biology, with 1–3 years of experience; or a master’s degree with 2–5 years of experience; or a bachelor’s degree with 4–7 years of experience; or related work experience.
  • Demonstrated development experience in Python or R; Python is preferred.
  • Strong analytical and first-principles thinking for solving ambiguous problems with broad definitions.
  • Experience breaking down and solving complex data problems.
  • Experience researching and applying machine learning, statistics, and/or data-mining techniques.
  • Interest in learning new technical subject areas and curiosity about cybersecurity problems.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with deep learning, particularly convolutional neural networks (CNNs) or computer vision methods.
  • Ability to explain statistical methods at a high level and communicate metrics to nontechnical experts.
  • Experience with novel data pipelines and varied data sources.
  • Familiarity with PyTorch or compiled programming languages such as C++ or C#.
  • Experience in software or hardware vulnerability analysis.
  • Active Secret or Top-Secret government clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Aid in designing and implementing machine learning and data engineering techniques for cybersecurity problems.
  • Improve existing techniques and devise new approaches to security data problems in collaboration with junior team members.
  • Independently propose and develop creative solutions to unique problems, potentially leading internal research projects.
  • Identify and explain the strengths and weaknesses of solutions, conclusions, and problem approaches during technical discussions, typically for non-data-science audiences.
  • Learn security-related domains and develop data-driven solutions, with subject matter ranging from software fuzzing to microelectronic supply chain analysis.

Benefits

  • Flexible, compressed work schedule, with most teams having every other Friday off.
  • Hybrid work arrangement allowing 60% in-office and 40% remote, subject to team and position needs.
  • Paid time off.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage, wellness incentives and benefits, and optional supplemental benefits.
  • Coverage and support for partners, gender-affirming care, health needs, and family formation.
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan: for most employees, Battelle contributes 5% regardless of employee contribution and matches employee contributions on top of that.
  • Tuition assistance for higher education.
  • Opportunities to pursue ideas in scientific and technological discovery through select funding.
  • Collaborative environment with world-class experts and opportunities to contribute to meaningful projects and communities.
