Open Roles•New York, NY
•$150,000 - $225,000•Hybrid

About The Position

Trillium is hiring its first dedicated Data Scientist to put the firm’s extensive trading and trader-history data to work. The role will build models and reporting to answer important questions about trading, risk, and the business, present findings to leadership, and help establish the firm’s data science function. Initial areas of focus include identifying early indicators of sustained trader success, measuring and managing risk as the firm expands into options, futures, and prediction markets, forecasting headcount and seat demand across three offices, and making unstructured text useful for analysis. The Data Scientist will report to the Managing Director of Trading and work directly with traders, technologists, and business leadership. A data engineering partner will support clean, reliable pipelines and datasets. The successful candidate will be rigorous, self-directed, comfortable being the sole data science expert, and accustomed to using AI tooling in analytical work. This is a hybrid role based in New York City.

Requirements

  • Strong analytical judgment, including the ability to frame ambiguous problems, choose appropriate methods, validate results, and clearly state what conclusions do and do not support.
  • Master’s degree or higher in Data Science, Statistics, Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
  • At least 4 years in data science, analytics, or business intelligence, including independent end-to-end ownership of modeling work.
  • Strong Python skills for analysis, statistical modeling, and visualization.
  • Proficiency with SQL for querying and manipulating data, with PostgreSQL and MySQL given as examples.
  • Hands-on experience applying NLP and LLM-based methods to unstructured text at scale, including evaluating output quality and selecting appropriate approaches.
  • Experience building dashboards with tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Streamlit, or Shiny.
  • Strong command of metrics design, hypothesis testing, statistical inference, and predictive modeling, with a record of turning models into actionable outputs.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to translate complex analysis into plain business terms for traders and executives.
  • Self-sufficiency and curiosity; ability to drive research and resolve difficult problems without an internal expert to rely on.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain dashboards and reporting used by leadership, traders, and business teams to track trading performance, risk, headcount, and firm-level metrics.
  • Lead deep-dive analyses and predictive modeling on strategic questions, owning each project from framing through delivery.
  • Apply NLP to unstructured business text, including internal communications, survey and feedback data, and external text sources; build classifiers, extract themes, and summarize at scale.
  • Set research priorities directly with leadership and keep them aligned with firm strategy.
  • Work with the data engineering partner to make new datasets fast, clean, and reliable, and collaborate with technology and business teams to scope requirements and expand what the firm can measure.
  • Bring automation and forward-looking analysis into the firm’s daily operating rhythm.
  • Make AI and LLM tooling a standard part of the workflow for exploratory analysis, code and query generation, and synthesis of unstructured data, and help establish responsible use of these tools.
