Data Scientist III

Chewy•Boston, MA

About The Position

Chewy’s Marketing Science team uses AI, machine learning, and statistics to understand and serve pet parents. The team builds data science and AI products powered by statistical and machine-learning models and agentic AI workflows to address marketing and customer problems in measurement, optimization, and personalization. The Data Scientist III works across the model-development lifecycle, from ideation, analysis, architecture, and prototyping through tuning, experimentation, and production deployment. The role partners with marketing stakeholders, machine-learning engineers, and data scientists to identify valuable opportunities, rapidly prototype solutions, and embed tools where they can deliver business impact. The position is based in Boston, Massachusetts.

Requirements

  • An advanced degree (M.S., Ph.D., or equivalent experience) in Data Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field, or at least 5 years of experience designing optimization and machine-learning solutions at scale.
  • Strong foundation in machine-learning and statistical methods, including Bayesian inference, regression, classification, forecasting, time series, causal inference, and techniques such as tree-based models (e.g., XGBoost and Random Forest).
  • Ability to understand and apply advanced mathematics and data science methodologies to complex business problems.
  • Proficiency in Python for building proofs of concept and deploying production-ready solutions.
  • Ability to translate business needs into AI and data science opportunities, with knowledge of marketing workflows, customer data, and campaign lifecycles.
  • Demonstrated ability to prototype quickly, iterate through experimentation, and operationalize models in production.
  • Strong business acumen and problem-solving skills, including the ability to work in ambiguous, fast-paced environments and turn open-ended problems into actionable solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to convey technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • An AI-native mindset: curiosity, creativity, and eagerness to use current AI tools to accelerate marketing impact.

Nice To Haves

  • Expertise in Bayesian statistics and hierarchical modeling.
  • Experience with at least one cloud services provider, such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Experience with ML platforms such as Databricks.

Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end data science projects, from idea generation and offline evaluation through deployment, experimentation, feedback loops, and ongoing model improvement.
  • Build, evaluate, and deploy predictive, statistical, and machine-learning models, including regression, forecasting, uplift, attribution, and causal-inference models.
  • Formalize assumptions about model behavior, define and systematically detect outliers, and implement fixes or improvements.
  • Partner with marketing stakeholders to identify, scope, and prioritize AI and data science opportunities with measurable business impact.
  • Build internal AI copilots and assistants to improve productivity, automate repetitive workflows, and accelerate campaign execution.
  • Monitor industry and technology trends to anticipate emerging opportunities in AI and e-commerce.
  • Communicate insights and recommendations clearly in writing and verbally to audiences with varying technical expertise.
