About The Position
The Data Scientist III oversees data management and integration efforts across the university, state, and federal agencies. Develops processes to extract, transform, and load data into common data repositories. Coordinates creating new databases, performing database backups and restores, user maintenance, and ensuring database performance. Provides guidance, training, and/or oversight of other Data Scientists. The Culverhouse College of Business at The University of Alabama is seeking a Research Data Scientist to join the Institute of Data and Analytics (IDA). The Data Scientist III will lead and support advanced data analysis efforts across multiple IDA projects, with emphasis on statistical modeling, machine learning, and effective communication of results. This individual will collaborate on high-impact research initiatives such as the Southern Regional Drug Data Research Center (SR-DDRC) and projects involving Alabama Medicaid, as well as interdisciplinary efforts in grant writing, manuscript development, and cross-campus collaborations. The role also includes mentoring students in analytical methods and software applications.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree and four (4) years of data science or analytics experience; OR master's degree and two (2) years of data science or analytics experience.
- Proficiency in statistical methods such as regression, longitudinal data analysis, and machine learning.
- Experience working with large data sets and data management tools.
- Proficiency in Python required.
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to academic research through peer-reviewed publications.
- Experience mentoring students or junior analysts in research settings.
Nice To Haves
- Additional experience in statistical programming languages such as SAS or R preferred.
- Familiarity with data visualization and dashboarding tools is a plus.
- Master’s degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Operations Management, Mathematics, or a closely related field that uses applied statistics, such as Public Health/Health Promotion, and at least three (3) years of experience in statistical data analysis and modeling.
- Doctoral degree in one of the above fields (preferred).
- Substantive experience in applied research in healthcare, public policy, or social sciences.
- Demonstrate ability to communicate technical findings to a variety of audiences, including stakeholders without technical backgrounds.
- Experience in managing research projects desired.
- Experience contributing to grant proposals and research manuscripts is strongly preferred.
