Data Scientist, AI Enablement (Remote)

Symetra,
$96,700 - $161,200Remote

About The Position

Symetra's AI Enablement team is a fast-growing team of builders inside our Data Analytics organization. Our goal is to accelerate AI adoption across the company in two ways: by building shared platforms, tooling, and patterns that let other teams effectively integrate AI into their workflows, and by shipping AI-powered applications for the most important use cases. We work in small, cross-functional teams, build with the people who use what we make, and move fast. Our first product in production, docstream, is an AI-powered document-processing platform that currently supports several of Symetra's back-end operational processes. We plan to continue to iterate on docstream and to build out other products using the same modular architecture, integrating third-party products where it makes sense. As a Data Scientist, you'll develop the AI and machine learning that powers our products. You'll develop and evaluate models, work with LLMs and the data behind them, and turn business problems into working AI features alongside the engineers and stakeholders you partner with.

Requirements

  • An early-career data scientist who builds and ships models that solve real problems.
  • A strong foundation in statistics, machine learning, and model development.
  • Python and SQL, and comfort working with real, messy data.
  • A solid understanding of modern AI: LLMs, RAG, prompt engineering, evaluation, and guardrails.
  • Use AI coding agents effectively in your day-to-day work, with the judgment to know when to use them and when not to.

Nice To Haves

  • Built and shipped LLM-powered applications (agents, vector stores, production evaluations).
  • Document understanding, NLP, or other unstructured-data experience.
  • MLOps: deploying, monitoring, and retraining models in production.

Responsibilities

  • Build, evaluate, and ship models that power our AI products, from ML to LLM-based approaches.
  • Turn business problems into well-defined data science work, and the results into clear recommendations.
  • Gather, explore, and model the data behind our AI products.
  • Partner with engineers and stakeholders to get models into production and in front of users.
  • Build the evaluations, guardrails, and prompts that make our LLM features accurate and reliable.

Benefits

  • Flexible full-time or hybrid telecommuting arrangements
  • 401(k) plan with immediate vesting and company matching up to 6%
  • Paid time away including vacation and sick time, flex days and ten paid holidays
  • Company matching for community contributions
