Data Product Owner

Marathon Health

About The Position

The Data Product Owner leads multiple cross-functional scrum teams delivering outcome-based data solutions for internal and, in some cases, external stakeholders. The role owns product vision, roadmap, and backlog, translating stakeholder goals into defined problems, success metrics, and acceptance criteria and validating whether delivered solutions achieve intended outcomes. The Data Product Owner chooses delivery approaches based on the problem and audience rather than defaulting to a specific technology. Potential approaches include Tableau, Snowflake and Cortex agents, Python-based insight packages, Streamlit portals, and reusable semantic-model components. The role coordinates input from the Director of Business Intelligence on analytics and reporting outcomes and the Technical Product Manager on technical and product execution, reconciling that input into a prioritized backlog. It requires adapting to changing Technology and Product priorities, resolving conflicts promptly, and keeping stakeholders aligned on tradeoffs and delivery status. A key focus is enabling others through foundational reusable components—especially a trusted, governed semantic model—and self-service documentation, patterns, and guardrails. The Data Product Owner also uses AI and modern tooling to accelerate discovery and delivery, monitors adoption and business impact, and ensures solutions meet appropriate quality, security, compliance, release, change-management, and production-readiness expectations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and at least 7 years of proven experience as a Product Owner, Product Manager, or in a similar role delivering data, analytics, or BI products, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated success leading Agile/Scrum teams, ideally more than one team concurrently.
  • Strong background in data and analytics and ability to reason about data products end to end, from source to consumption.
  • Excellent stakeholder-management and communication skills, including comfort working with Product leadership and non-technical business users.
  • Experience translating business needs into prioritized, outcome-driven work and measuring results.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in a matrixed structure, taking direction from multiple leaders while managing competing priorities.
  • Experience operating amid frequent change and ambiguity.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in healthcare, population health, benefits administration, or a related regulated industry.
  • Experience with data governance, data quality, and master data initiatives.
  • Hands-on familiarity with Snowflake, including Cortex agents, Cortex Analyst/search services, and semantic views.
  • Experience with Tableau, Python, Streamlit, or comparable frameworks for lightweight portals and insight packages.
  • Practical fluency leveraging AI/LLMs to build, accelerate, or augment data solutions.
  • Strong grasp of semantic modeling and reusable, governed foundations for self-service.
  • Experience managing product backlogs in Azure DevOps or similar tools.
  • Awareness of data governance, security, and privacy considerations; experience handling sensitive or regulated data such as PHI is a plus.
  • Comfort selecting and working across varied delivery technologies rather than specializing in a single technology.
  • An outcome-first, technology-agnostic mindset and willingness to move away from tools that no longer fit.
  • Adaptability and calm amid shifting Technology and Product priorities.
  • Diplomacy and decisiveness in building stakeholder trust and making prioritization calls when direction conflicts.
  • A builder-and-enabler orientation, including motivation to help others create solutions.
  • Curiosity and continuous learning as the tooling landscape evolves.

Responsibilities

  • Own the product vision, roadmap, and prioritized backlog for a portfolio of outcome-based data solutions serving internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead multiple scrum teams day to day, including backlog grooming, sprint planning, prioritization, and removing blockers, while focusing teams on measurable outcomes.
  • Reconcile direction from the Director of Business Intelligence and the Technical Product Manager into a single prioritized backlog.
  • Surface and resolve conflicts in priorities or direction before they stall teams.
  • Translate stakeholder goals into clearly defined problems, success metrics, and acceptance criteria, and validate that delivered solutions move those metrics.
  • Select delivery approaches appropriate to each problem and audience, including Tableau, Snowflake/Cortex agents, and Python/Streamlit solutions.
  • Leverage AI and modern tooling to accelerate discovery, prototyping, development, and iteration.
  • Build and steward reusable foundational components, especially a trusted and governed semantic model.
  • Establish and support self-service enablement through documentation, patterns, and guardrails.
  • Partner with Product leaders and internal stakeholders to align on priorities, tradeoffs, and delivery status.
  • Adapt priorities and communicate impacts as Technology and Product direction changes.
  • Ensure solutions meet quality, security, and compliance expectations appropriate to their use.
  • Track adoption, usage, and business impact and use insights to refine the portfolio.
  • Define business outcomes and success metrics for major initiatives and ensure realized value is measured after delivery.
  • Ensure solutions follow established release, change-management, and production-readiness processes.
