Data Integration & Metadata Architect

Bowhead•Stafford, VA
•$150,000 - $190,000

About The Position

UICGS/Bowhead is seeking a Data Integration & Metadata Architect to support PM MAGTF C2 and the Common Services and Applications (CSA) Agile Release Train (ART) in Stafford, Virginia. The role provides hands-on technical support for managing, architecting, and evolving data sources, interfaces, data products, and integration patterns across the MAGTF C2 Common Software Stack. Working with Government Product Management and technical stakeholders, the architect establishes and maintains technical visibility of the data ecosystem supporting the Tactical Data Orchestration Layer (TDOL) and other Common Services capabilities. The role documents authoritative information about data sources, interfaces, schemas, ownership, lineage, transformations, consumers, dependencies, and lifecycle, while supporting the implementation and maturation of enterprise metadata and data-catalog capabilities. It requires direct engagement with data, systems, engineers, and metadata-management tools to discover how data moves through the environment and keep that information current as systems and data products evolve. The position is located in Stafford, Virginia.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and directly relevant experience.
  • At least 5 years of relevant hands-on experience in data engineering, data integration, data architecture, metadata management, systems integration, or related technical disciplines.
  • Recent hands-on experience with data sources, interfaces, schemas, pipelines, APIs, databases, streams, or other operational data systems.
  • Experience using enterprise data catalogs, metadata-management platforms, or metadata repositories such as DataHub, Collibra, Alation, Microsoft Purview, Apache Atlas, or comparable technologies.
  • Experience capturing and maintaining technical metadata for data sources, datasets, interfaces, APIs, streams, data products, or other data assets.
  • Experience developing or maintaining data lineage across source systems, ingestion, transformation, storage, distribution, and consuming systems.
  • Strong understanding of data integration concepts and technologies, including APIs, message/event streams, databases, files, data pipelines, and structured and semi-structured data.
  • Experience identifying and documenting authoritative data sources, producers and consumers, schemas, interfaces, transformations, dependencies, and ownership.
  • Working knowledge of logical and physical data models, schemas, data-flow diagrams, interface definitions, and related technical artifacts.
  • Ability to investigate complex technical environments, work directly with engineers and system owners, and determine how data moves through systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical data relationships, dependencies, and issues to engineering and Government stakeholders.
  • Must currently hold a DoW security clearance at the minimum Secret level.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds, stand and walk for prolonged amounts of time, and twist, bend, and squat periodically.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience implementing, configuring, administering, or significantly contributing to an enterprise data catalog or metadata-management capability.
  • Experience with automated metadata ingestion, schema discovery, lineage capture, metadata APIs, or integration between catalog platforms and operational data systems.
  • Experience with DataHub or comparable open-source metadata/catalog platforms.
  • Experience with data-product concepts, including reusable data products, data contracts, ownership, lifecycle management, and producer/consumer relationships.
  • Experience with modern data platforms, data fabrics, streaming architectures, data lakes/lakehouses, or distributed data environments.
  • Experience supporting data architecture or integration in distributed, tactical-edge, disconnected/degraded, or limited-bandwidth environments.
  • Experience with Department of Defense, Department of the Navy, Marine Corps, Joint, or Command and Control systems and data.
  • Familiarity with data governance, data quality, reference/master data, semantic modeling, ontologies, or knowledge graphs.
  • Familiarity with cloud and containerized data environments and modern DevSecOps practices.
  • Experience supporting Government acquisition organizations, Product Managers, or technical authorities.
  • Familiarity with Scrum, the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), Features/Enablers, MVP/MVCR development, PI Planning, System Demos, and Inspect & Adapt.
  • Experience supporting technical experimentation, prototyping, and evaluation of emerging data and integration technologies.
  • Current Security+CE certification.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain technical metadata for data sources, interfaces, feeds, datasets, and data products supporting TDOL and the broader Common Services ecosystem.
  • Capture and maintain information about data ownership, authoritative sources, schemas and models, interfaces, transport mechanisms, update characteristics, operational availability, and technical constraints.
  • Develop and maintain end-to-end data lineage across source systems, interfaces, ingestion services, transformations, data products, distribution mechanisms, and consuming applications.
  • Maintain metadata in enterprise data-catalog or metadata-management platforms, ensuring it remains current, searchable, traceable, and useful to technical and product stakeholders.
  • Identify dependencies among producers, consumers, interfaces, schemas, transformations, and data products, and assess potential impacts of planned technical changes.
  • Analyze data flows and integration patterns to identify duplication, gaps, inconsistencies, unnecessary transformations, unclear ownership, and opportunities for reuse.
  • Develop and maintain logical and physical data models, interface documentation, data-flow representations, and related technical artifacts as required.
  • Work with data engineers, software developers, system owners, architects, and vendors to discover, validate, and maintain technical metadata and integration information.
  • Support the definition and maturation of reusable data products, including authoritative sources, consumers, interfaces, dependencies, metadata, and lifecycle considerations.
  • Support technical analysis and experimentation involving shared data services, data fabrics, integration technologies, and emerging C2 capabilities.
  • Provide Government Product Management and technical leadership with current information about the data ecosystem, dependencies, integration risks, and implications of proposed changes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
