About The Position

The Governance Engineer owns the hands-on administration and day-to-day operation of the platform’s data governance and security tooling. This technical role administers and operates Snowflake Horizon and native Snowflake security features, Immuta for access governance, Anomalo for data quality, Alation for the data catalog, identity and access integrations, an internal tool for AI-generated data descriptions, and an in-development tool that tags data at ingest. The engineer is the first point of contact for alerts, configuration issues, and access questions across these tools. The role is part of an agile internal data services team that includes full-stack, reporting, and data engineers, SREs, product owners, the Data Governance Lead, and executive stakeholders. The Data Governance Lead sets program strategy, policy, and stakeholder alignment; this role implements that policy through working configurations and ongoing operations. Complex or platform-level issues are handled in partnership with platform engineering and SRE teams. Experience with the specific tools is not required; the ability and appetite to learn them is expected.

Requirements

  • Skills listed: Python, SQL, Snowflake, and Informatica.
  • Intermediate-level experience.
  • Ability and appetite to learn the specific governance and security tools; prior experience with those tools is not expected.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with data access governance tooling such as Immuta or SecuPi.
  • Experience with data quality tooling such as Anomalo, Monte Carlo, or similar.
  • Experience with data catalog or metadata tooling such as Alation, Collibra, or Purview.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code and CI/CD, such as Terraform or equivalent, applied to platform or security configuration.
  • Experience with identity and access management tooling such as SailPoint or Okta.
  • Experience participating in vendor evaluations or proofs of concept.
  • Experience supporting domain data stewards to identify and define critical data elements and data quality rules, and participating in root cause analysis and remediation.
  • Familiarity with privacy, compliance, or audit frameworks and their technical implementation.
  • Experience with AI-assisted data documentation or description tooling.
  • Exposure to agent or LLM access patterns over governed data.

Responsibilities

  • Administer and configure Snowflake Horizon and native Snowflake security and governance features, including RBAC, masking, and object tagging, as a light platform administrator.
  • Implement and maintain access governance policies in Immuta by translating governance and security requirements into technical controls.
  • Configure, tune, and monitor data quality checks and alerts across governed datasets.
  • Maintain and enrich the data catalog so datasets are discoverable, described, and classified.
  • Adopt and help refine the internal tool for generating and validating data descriptions at scale.
  • Partner with platform engineering to test, integrate, and roll out the in-development ingest-time data tagging tool.
  • Provide first-line support for the governance and security tool stack, including alerts, access issues, catalog questions, and tool-level configuration issues; partner with platform engineering and SRE on complex or platform-specific problems.
  • Support identity and access integration, including onboarding and access certification workflows.
  • Participate in vendor conversations, technical evaluations, and proofs of concept by defining validation needs, conducting hands-on testing, and reporting results.
  • Translate governance and security policies defined by the Data Governance Lead and Security team into technical configuration across the tool stack.
  • Automate and codify governance configuration where possible so controls are repeatable, version-controlled, and auditable.
  • Document configurations, runbooks, integration patterns, and operational procedures for the governance and security stack.
  • Help define ongoing governance-tool operations, including monitoring, support, routine maintenance, and upgrades.
  • Evaluate emerging governance and security tools as the stack evolves and make technical recommendations.
  • Support domain data stewards in identifying and defining critical data elements and data quality rules, and participate in root cause analysis and remediation.
