About The Position

We are looking for a motivated and collaborative Data Governance Coordinator to play a key leadership role in advancing a data-driven culture within the Department by leading the development, implementation, and oversight of policies, processes, and frameworks that ensure the effective management, quality, security, and compliance of the Department’s data assets. Working with considerable independence and collaboration across technical teams, business units, compliance stakeholders, and other state agencies, the coordinator establishes enterprise data governance standards, guides cross-functional teams through discovery and documentation of data practices, and promotes data integrity, accessibility, and literacy to support informed decision-making and organizational goals. Preferred candidates will have a degree and experience in data management, data analytics, or data science.

Requirements

  • Self-directed leadership: Ability to work independently, take initiative, manage multiple priorities, and move projects forward with minimal guidance.
  • Transportation data ecosystem expertise: Broad understanding of transportation data sources and how they integrate to support state and departmental decision-making.
  • Data governance leadership: Proven ability to lead managers and cross-functional teams in implementing governance best practices, facilitating discovery, and defining requirements.
  • Communication and documentation excellence: Strong skills in documenting data processes, requirements, and governance outcomes and communicating effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Data management and analytics knowledge: Understanding of data lifecycle management, data quality, metadata, master data management, analytics, databases, and data warehousing concepts.
  • Continuous improvement and data literacy focus: Growth mindset with the ability to improve business processes and build programs that strengthen data literacy and trust across the organization.
  • A combination of formal education (undergraduate to graduate level), training, and/or experience demonstrating proficiency and seasoning in business systems analysis, development, and configuration.
  • Additional specialized education and/or experience may be required in related fields such as finance, taxes, computer technology, or other subject matter directly related to the specific position.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain data governance frameworks, policies, and standards for the Department.
  • Lead data governance committees, councils, and workgroups to align data practices with organizational and statewide goals.
  • Partner with IT, business units, and legal/compliance teams to ensure adherence to data privacy, protection, and security regulations.
  • Collaboratively define and monitor data quality standards and ensures data consistency across systems and programs.
  • Lead discovery and requirements sessions with diverse subject matter experts to define data models and business rules.
  • Document governance processes, decision points, and compliance requirements with exceptional clarity and accuracy.
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate data-related risks in coordination with enterprise risk management efforts.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to managers and peers on data governance best practices and adoption strategies.
  • Works to develop and implement a department-wide data literacy program to promote understanding and responsible data use.
  • Serves as a liaison between technical and operational staff to ensure that data supports decision-making, transparency, and accountability.
  • Monitors governance metrics and supports continuous improvement of data management practices.
