About The Position

The Ministry of Primary and Preventative Health Services is focused on building a more resilient and sustainable healthcare system for Albertans. The Data Access and Information Privacy Branch is responsible for data standards, governance, and privacy within Alberta’s healthcare system. The Data Governance team is crucial in ensuring that data-driven decisions are supported by robust governance, privacy standards, and stakeholder collaboration. This work aims to improve data access, reduce duplication, and foster innovation, ultimately leading to more efficient and effective services for Albertans. This role is ideal for someone passionate about transforming healthcare through data-driven innovation, possessing a blend of technical expertise, analytical skills, and a collaborative approach. Requirements

  • University degree in a related field (i.e., Information Management, Computer Science, Business, Science, Public Administration) plus four (4) years of progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to proactively identify and resolve data governance issues and improve processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams and lead stakeholders to drive alignment and results.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in data governance with supporting experience in data management, business intelligence or data analysis
  • Strong expertise in designing and implementing data governance frameworks, policies, and standards.
  • Experience in data privacy, data security, and regulations
  • Certifications in data management or governance (e.g., CDMP, DGSP)
  • Experience with data quality and metadata standards to support data discovery, lineage tracking and improve data quality.
  • Familiarity with data governance/cataloging tools, data modeling and databases

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain data governance policies, processes, and guidelines.
  • Establish data standards and definitions to ensure consistency, accuracy, and high trust in data.
  • Design and implement data governance metrics to track compliance, adoption, and performance.
  • Develop and maintain metadata standards for structure, organization, and accessibility while overseeing data classification, quality assessment, monitoring, and improvement processes.
  • Facilitate cross-functional collaboration to drive accountability, supporting effective data use and data governance initiatives.
  • Prepare clear documentation, presentations, and recommendations for diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Recommend improvements to data governance processes as business, technology, and regulatory requirements evolve.
  • Provide guidance, training, and support to promote data governance adoption and advance data literacy across the health sector.
  • Support Data Governance Committee operations, engagement, and stakeholder coordination as needed.
