About The Position

NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island is seeking a Per Diem Data Entry Operator for its Serology/Central Processing department in Mineola. This role supports the daily operations of the laboratory by providing clinical, clerical, and inventory management assistance. Responsibilities include specimen management and processing, ordering and receiving inventory, instrument maintenance, and communication with providers and other laboratories.

Requirements

  • High school graduate with 12 college credits in Chemistry or Biology.
  • Laboratory experience, excluding Intake/Accessioning, including handling open containers of blood and body fluid.
  • Knowledge of computer applications, especially Excel and Word.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains an adequate supply of general laboratory items, department-specific reagents, and materials needed for specimen analysis, and communicates supply needs to supervisor/manager.
  • Ensures proper receipt and storage of laboratory materials, documenting according to NYU policy and regulatory guidelines.
  • Understands specimen requirements, communicates with providers, and documents when samples are cancelled or rejected.
  • Assures specimen quality prior to processing.
  • Confirms or clarifies requests with providers, modifies, and places orders as required.
  • Performs front-end processing of all samples, including labeling, centrifuging, aliquoting, transport, and placing samples on automated test platforms.
  • Performs back-end processing of samples, including preparation for storage, tracking, and disposal according to policy.
  • Properly disposes of all department-regulated medical, biological, chemical, and clean waste.
  • Cleans all laboratory work surfaces and assigned equipment according to laboratory protocols and documents as required.
  • Maintains logs associated with temperature and humidity for assigned equipment, work areas, and eyewash stations.
  • Completes add-on requests per policy, including retrieval of specimens from within and outside the department.
  • Reviews routine and stat pending lists and retrieves missed tests/specimens.
  • Answers the phone and provides assistance to callers regarding specimen requirements, test availability, turnaround times, etc.
  • Accesses automated test platforms to assess the status of test samples.
  • Ships blood and body fluids to other sites.
  • Assists in blood product modification (irradiation, thawing of frozen products).
  • Manages inventory of blood products, including receiving, stocking, and tracking expiration.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
