Data Engineering & ML Intern

DISA Tech•Casper, WY

About The Position

DISA Technologies develops HPSA (High Pressure Slurry Attrition) mineral processing technology. The company has accumulated historical test data from lab, pilot, and field testing, including feed characterization, particle size, chemistry, and process performance. The data is distributed across projects, sites, and file formats and must be located, catalogued, and standardized before it can be used for analytics and machine learning. Working with the ML Engineer, the intern will own the end-to-end consolidation of historical test data using provided inventory, format-specification, and tabular-data templates. The goal is to produce a governed, catalogued collection of clean data files ready to load into the company’s cloud data platform. After the core work, the intern may conduct exploratory data analysis and write feasibility memos about questions the historical data can support. Additional work may include applying naming and tagging conventions to legacy folders, preparing metadata for a document-system migration, and cross-referencing test records with related measurement datasets.

Responsibilities

  • Build and extend or correct an inventory of historical data sources, including location, client, project, site/program, equipment unit, date range, format, and completeness.
  • Write short format specifications for common record types and provide example files for each.
  • Transcribe test files into a consistent tabular template and save them to a designated staging area.
  • Produce a data quality report covering gaps, incomplete or suspect analyses, and contradictions between files.
  • Conduct exploratory data analysis to identify candidate correlations across datasets, such as feed characteristics and process performance.
  • Write short feasibility memos explaining which questions the historical data can and cannot support.
  • Depending on progress, apply file-naming and tagging conventions to legacy folders, prepare metadata for a document-system migration, and cross-reference test records against related measurement datasets.
