About The Position

Crux is hiring a Data Engineer to join its Data Team and embed with Market Intelligence. The role will build and maintain the foundational datasets and pipelines that support research, publications, and client deliverables. It will make survey responses, pricing series, volume and capacity forecasts, and buyer participation data clean, joined, regularly refreshed, and reliable for analysts. This is an early-stage build role with substantial ownership of Crux’s data foundation. The engineer will automate survey workflows, support reporting and downstream tools, turn recurring research questions into repeatable queries, and strengthen data practices through validation, documentation, version control, and reproducible outputs. The position is remote-first, with the option to work from anywhere in the US and Canada or from optional offices and coworking locations.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience building and maintaining production data pipelines in high-growth, fast-paced environments.
  • Fluency in Python and SQL, including the ability to write, test, and debug production code and complex queries.
  • Proficiency in cloud data warehousing, including schema design, incremental data loading, query optimization, and cost management.
  • Experience with data extraction, transformation, loading, scheduling, and monitoring.
  • Knowledge of data-quality practices, including input validation, automated testing, monitoring, documentation, version control, and reproducible outputs.
  • Ability to translate business or research needs into clearly scoped technical requirements, deliverables, and implementation plans.
  • Ability to communicate technical tradeoffs, project status, data limitations, and delivery risks to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Hands-on experience with AI-enabled tools supporting software development, data analysis, testing, documentation, or workflow automation.
  • Sound technical judgment in evaluating datasets and engineering approaches against downstream reporting, research, or product requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with energy, finance, transaction, or market intelligence data.
  • Exposure to research, forecasting, survey analysis, or data-intensive publications.
  • Hands-on involvement in developing or supporting analytical or statistical models.
  • Knowledge of model testing and data-validation practices, including documenting assumptions and handling missing values and outliers.
  • Familiarity with data visualization, business intelligence, or reporting tools.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain Market Intelligence data pipelines, including extraction, transformation, scheduling, and monitoring for survey responses, pricing series, volume and capacity forecasts, and buyer participation data.
  • Automate survey workflows, including ingesting, cleaning, and joining data, to reduce manual work as the survey program scales.
  • Support the reporting layer so findings are available in the tools, dashboards, and publications that depend on them.
  • Help turn recurring bespoke research questions into repeatable, productized queries.
  • Improve Crux’s data practices by validating inputs, documenting assumptions, using version control, producing reproducible outputs, and identifying additional use cases across teams.
