About The Position

The Data Engineer will be part of the UK Data Engineering team as a subject matter expert, responsible for the acquisition, transformation, and delivery of retail data to the Hiscox UK business unit. This team directly deals with a wide base of internal clients that we are required to support with valuable information, with the aim to back their business decisions and contribute to Hiscox success. Currently building a new data platform based on Databricks and Azure technologies, the aim is to be able to support all the UK operational data needs. The role involves sharing time between supporting the cloud platform, engaging with internal stakeholders, and supporting the on-premise platform up to discontinuation. UK Data engineers are not solely backend developers; you will be expected to develop an understanding of the business and be comfortable discussing analytics topics with the wider business. The ideal candidate has a good balance between being a data pipeline builder and data wrangler who enjoys improving the technical infrastructure, keeping in sight what delivers value to the business.

Requirements

  • Strong analytical skills with a focus on data.
  • A code-first approach.
  • Understanding of continuous integration/continuous development principles.
  • Experience with data engineering principles (data ingestion, data transformation, etc.)
  • Proficiency in TSQL.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Azure Data Lake Storage, Microsoft Azure Data Factory, Databricks.
  • Familiarity with team collaboration, both in person and in code.
  • Immense curiosity, high energy and desire to go the extra mile to make a difference.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Fluent in English, verbally and written.

Nice To Haves

  • A Computer Science degree or data related qualification.
  • Experience with PowerBI platforms or similar.
  • Hands-on experience in the Insurance Sector or Financial Services.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, maintain and enhance data integrations in Databricks and Azure Data Factory
  • Merge and cleanse data to provide a reliable and curated data layer.
  • Engage effectively and proactively with multiple stakeholders to understand requirements.
  • Assess and implement suitable data solutions to meet business needs.
  • Maintain a comprehensive documentation suite for our data engineering implementations and provide training where necessary to support team members and stakeholders to self-serve their own usage of the data and MI/Reporting.
  • Monitor batch and act on failures, identifying root causes.
  • Refine business requirements into development tasks, estimating their complexity and dependencies.
